MSV video camera permissions
It's been a while since I last raced, and I'm doing a race soon at an MSV track, so I called them up and asked about whether there's a new camera permissions slip to fill in when running a camera in the car.
To my surprise, the person I was speaking to didn't know! Anyone have any recent experience here, do we still need to hand in these forms? |

Is it not at scrutineering? Get a form at sign-in, fill it in and show it to the scruitineer who puts it with the papers (and presumably checks the mount is safe).

Yeah I guess I'll do that, but you used to be able to get them ahead of time, and it's a little odd that no one seems to know the procedure any more

I thought they abandoned the requirement several seasons ago as almost everyone had cameras and it was an unnecessary level of bureaucracy.

I'm sure there is no permission required from the MSV circuits anymore. The final regs for every race i've done there in the last couple of years have only stipulated that video should only be for personal use, and the camera needs to be okayed by the scruitineer.

The thing is now with the terrific micro camcorders on the market that weigh next to nothing you can mount them with a cable tie and they can't do a lot of harm.
A bit different to many moons ago using a 16mm film camera ! |

just make sure they are securely attached .... it saves the "driver of car xx has lost his camera, has anyone found one around the circuit" calls from race control

To back-up what is said above. It is a case of having to have it fixed for scrutineering to be checked, that is it.
When I first saw this thread title I unfairly thought, oh no, what do we have to do now?! |

There does remain Blue Book Reg J.5.20.50:
"Be prohibited from carrying cameras/videos unless authorised by the Chief Scrutineer and Event Organiser." Your camera should be inspected at scrutineering, and passed along with the rst of the car, but no specific authorisation from the "Event Organiser"? Unless they waive that authority somewhere in the small print? See also, K.10.3.3.d "Fitment of cameras to helmets by whatever means is not permitted unless an integral camera is provided by the helmet manufacturer" (Fell foul of this myself) And,strangely, given all the in-car videos on the 'Net: R.7.2.9 "The use of in car cameras is forbidden." And given R.48.10.10. "If a camera is carried, the fitting must be specifically approved by a Scrutineer."! Plus regs for Karting, but that's not what you are asking about, I think. John |

I specifically keep my camera mounting as simple (and as strong as possible). I also back it up with cable ties. Although no scrutineer has ever offered any advise - no need to I guess.

I forgot to update this - we had no problems on the day, but it's just one of those little things that crossed my mind. When I last raced (sprint races) back in 2009, the MSV circuits wanted a 'grant of media permissions' form. I guess with all the cameras these days and YouTube, etc. they gave up.
So all good. I knew the score on the camera mounts. Thanks everyone. |

It was 'ok' Started the main race in 3rd, led for a lap and a bit, before lifting off for a yellow and being mugged. Finished 5th. Had another race in a different car where I started 18th in a misfiring car and finished 17th after some epic midfield battles

Fairly certain that the contract that MSVR have sent AROC for the race we are running with them includes a restriction on cameras being carried without permission......or perhaps it is a restriction on anything being published on eg Youtube without permission. I'll dig it out and refresh my memory....
Never heard of anyone having a problem, mind you, and there are umpteen clips on Youtube. |
