Shorter Race Weekends
From the SpeedCenter website...
"In a continuing effort to support teams competing in the CART FedEx Championship Series, Championship Auto Racing Teams, Inc. will shorten race weekend formats for Round 7 in Chicago and Round 15 in England from three-day to two-day events. "The decision on Chicago and Rockingham was made not only to assist our teams with cost cutting issues, but to increase the excitement surrounding our events with two days of non-stop Champ Car action," said CART Vice President of Racing Operations John Lopes. "Implementing this new format further supports our commitment to our teams and focus on growing the CART FedEx Championship Series." The CART Grand Prix of Chicago at Chicago Motor Speedway will be contested the weekend of June 29-30, with practice and qualifying on Saturday and warm-up and the race on Sunday in the new two-day format, rather than the traditional three-day event. The weekend schedule for the Rockingham 500 CART FedEx Championship Series race at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Corby, England September 13-14 will be a two-day event as well, only with practice and qualifying on Friday and warm-up and the race on Saturday." |

I can't help but think this is wrongheaded. F1 seems to be moving in the same direction, and I'm pretty sure that if the attending fans want anything, it's not less track time.
Maybe regs about engine durability and required track time need to be reconsidered. I'm not sure how you address this (ie forcing teams to run twice each day), but there's got to be something that can be done? One argument put forward by F1 teams was that, since they were allotted a set number of tires, they'd run out of rubber by the time of the race if they ran too much on Friday. I seem to recall a proposal to not include Friday rubber in the allotment. Whatever happened with that? |

I'm in favour of shorted race weekends, as fans can then afford to go on each day.

But, as an example, CART's Toronto race has GA tickets priced like this:
$30 Friday $40 Saturday $50 Sunday $60 All weekend. All weekend is cheaper than two days, even if it's just practice. How would a two day weekend be cheaper than a three under this scenario? |

GA at Belle Isle on Friday was always free. But right now it seems that only a few of the ovals are having their weekends shortened, so there will still be that extra point up for grabs on road course Fridays.

Toronto is an exception, most circuits charge $5.00 or admission is free on Friday.
Two day weekends save costs for the teams, that will be necessary when teams have to purchase their own engines... |

Wonder if that will make it longer or shorter days for the marshals? We are usualluy at morning briefing at 06.30, and are rarely off track before 18.00.
Being cynical is it that the 2 ovals concerned have trouble getting support races for the event? |
