Cleaning race suits
Does anyone have advice/dos/donts for cleaning a race suit?

Here I am! Quite safe to chuck it in the washing machine at low temp - 40 degrees. Use a detergent powder or liquid, not a soap based one (so not Persil, Fairy Snow etc). It doesn't do any harm, just creates a flammable deposit if it reacts with hard water.
Hang up to dry with shoulder and ankle supported so it doesn't deform due to weight of water. You can also get some special anti stain stuff if badly soiled, but everyday dirt just washes out. Above holds true for Proban and Nomex alike. HTH Max |

Is tumble drying safe, Max?
Or laying it on a radiator? If you (I!) get it really dirty - oily sleeves for instance, and I have - is dry-cleaning safe? John |

I use soap liquid, on a 40 setting to wash my alpinestars suit, never had a problem and it comes out well.

Max made my suit late 2003/early 2004 (he'll be telling me I need a new one soon!)
always wash at 30 after every race weekend, tiny bit of detergent, and hang it up. its faded a little bit but otherwise its still in excellent condition (well made obviously!) |

When I get oil or grease on my race suit after laying under the car working on it in the paddock I find a spot of brake cleaner or some petrol on a rag gets it clean fairly easily. Luckily I drive an open car so I don't get affected by the fumes afterward.

I have a magic washing basket! Just pop it in and presto! In just a few short days it comes back perfectly clean. Now when these things happen you do not ask questions.
