Porsche 917 book
I am thinking of getting the Peter Morgan book, 'Porsche 917', published by Haynes. Has anyone out there got this book and is it a good buy? Alternatively a book that includes some of the other Porsche sportscars (ie. 908, 936 and 956/962) would be good.
Cheers guys. |

Yep, I have it and also some of the profiles on the other Porsche models. Are they worth it?
Well, you'll never see such cars again so I enjoy picking up on some of the detail now. Good pictures and text on stunning cars doing super stuff, but they are only ever one writer's perspective. Collect them definitely IMHO. |

I'm a big Porsche fan, especially of the 917 (you won't be surprised to learn!).
I've got the Peter Morgan book, among others, and it's fab. I think it has a good mix of technical stuff, development, racing and coverage of the chief characters invovled. It's also got the views of people who were actually working on the project and the insights it gives, like the relationship between JWA and Porsche, are facinating. |

Thanks for that, have either of you got 'Porsche Racing Cars: A History of Factory Competition' by Bill Oursler, -again any good? I have got a book token burning a hole in my wallet at the moment, but for my wife's sanity I will only get one of these books, which would you suggest?
krt917, are you at York uni or Ripon and St John? If the uni then have a pint of Worthingtons for me in the Charles, I miss the place! |

No, haven't got any of those. But I do have
Le Mans Porsche by John Sallen (Motorbooks International), which is an interesting read, but is much more valued by me for some really excellent photography. |

I was a student at York from 92-96. Great years, met my wife there, (be warned!) and we try and visit the place as often as we can. Haven't been up for a while due to the new nipper, but will no doubt find an excuse before too long.
If the Charles is your nearest pub, then I fear for your degree, especially once the beer garden opens for the summer! Many a day was lost after the suggestion of a quick pint over lunch... |

Porsche in motorsport. The first fifty years. By Peter Morgan. Published by Haynes. ISBN 1 85960 659 8.
Good reference book covering the racing Porsches from 550 to GT1. Porsche 917. The ultimate weapon. By Ian Bamsey/Bill Oursler. Published by Haynes. ISBN 0-85429-605-0. 150 pages covering the five years of the 917, from development to the CanAms. 917 heaven. I've even got the Ferrari 512 book in this series. The racing Porsches. A technical triumph. By Paul Frere. Published by Arco. ISBN 0-668-02972-2. Another good reference book. Covers 904 to 917. Porsche racing cars of the 70s. By Paul Frere. Published by PSL. ISBN 0 85059 442 1. Bit of overlap with the above but just as good. Covers 917 to 936. Last edited by carrera; 6 May 2003 at 19:40. |

Are "Porsche Racing Cars: A History of Factory Competition"
by Bill Oursler and "Porsche in motorsport: The first fifty years" by Peter Morgan basically the same book? The covers are different and clearly so are the authors, but the content seems very similar, both books are 192 pages, similar dimensions and both were published in October 2000. Is one for the European market and one for the American? |

Don't know the answer to that one. For all 917 fans pop in to the Historic Cars bit and look at the slides from Sands.

For anhyone interested in 917s, I'd also recommend you read "The Certain Sound" by John Wyer, which includes, amongst other things, the full story of JW Automotive's involvement with Porsche and the 917s. Its quite a dry read, but very informative none the less.

"That Certain Sound" is an absolute cracker - John Wyer is perhaps not the best raconteur in print, but he has a knack of painting pen-portraits of the personalities he worked with which really give you an impression of their character.
The Ian Bamsey Porsche 917 book is superb also. Definitely recommended. Only problem is - both that and the Wyer book are highly sought after and are liable to cost you a packet if you can find one. But they're worth it. Oh boy, are they worth it! |

Just to let people know that I got "Porsche in motorsport: The first fifty years" by Peter Morgan and am very happy with it. It covers virtually all the racing Porsches, and is a good introduction to the subject. Clearly it doesn't have an enormous amount of detail, but I still learnt answers to some questions I have had for a while.
Oh and some cracking photos as well. |
