NZ. Race Capri's
While we're on the subject, does anyone know the line of ownership of Paul Fahey's Cologne Capri after he sold it (Grant Walker, Inky Tulloch (?) and then what, where is it now ?
And The Halliday Capri, which was a nice clone of the Cologne Capri, where is that now ? Thanks, in anticipation Bruce |

You might want to have a read of this article - I've just checked, it's not the same car:

Thanks Alfa, Paul Fahey's car was an RS
2.6 so not the Moffat car (RS 3100) which I think Mike John owns, but it could well be the one listed directly above it. Also with an anonomous owner. I'll ask the club if it is the same car. Thks Bruce |

As you know I race a Group 1 Capri. But I've always had an interest in the Cologne cars. What's prompted this query Bruce?

Peter,
I have an ex circuit car, and as we talk amongst ourselves, my friends and I just wonder what happened to all the cars that used to race together, early 70's in this case. The Cologne Capris were pretty nice cars, and quick too. If I find out anything i'll be sure to let you know. Bruce. |

I know a little of a few (ex)works cars:
A 73 RS2600 was entered in the Dutch TC in october 1973 for Akersloot to claim the Dutch title; he may have kept it since he had one of the ex-works 1973 RS cars in 1974. His old car (a 71 car probably) was updated and sold. In 1975, the car was raced in the Dutch TC by Ron Kluit, still with the 12-valve engine but a new aero kit. The car was not used in 1976, in 1977 it returned to the Dutch Group 5 championship, with an ugly rear wing but with a 24-valve engine too, driven by Siep de Jong IIRC. Three 1974 RS3100 works cars stayed in Germany in 1975; one was raced by Waltraud Odenthal, one was raced by Werner Schommers, a third one was kept by Ford, used for Jochen Mass at the Norisring and then used by Ludwig for the final races of the DRM. It was raced in Kyalami in november as well. |

your site is excellent, thanks for creating it. These cars are some of the best looking race cars, The Jochen Mass car went on to be the Allan Moffat (Aust) car, and i'm guessing that the NZ Paul Fahey car was probably one of those early cars rebodied. Slightly off-topic in a Capri thread, but what about the Paul Fahey FVA Escort that he ran prior to the Capri? I think he raced the Boss Mustang between the Escort and the Capri, so that would put the FVA Escort at late 1960's?
The FVA Escort did a good job of beating Mustangs and Camaros on the twisty circuits like the old Levin track. I seem to remember him importing it built up - ex UK. Possibly an Alan Mann car? - did they run FVA's in the 1960's or just the twin cam? Does anyone know where that one is today? Now we have one more car to follow up. I'm pretty sure the Jim Richards car was ex Alan Mann, whether it was the same car that Fahey ran, I couldn't say, but i'll see what I can find. Some day we must get a site dedicated to NZ cars. Regards, Bruce |

New things I was told today.
Jim Carney went to UK to by the Alan Mann/Frank Gardner FVA, after it's last race but evidently it was damaged or even destroyed in that race, so it seems they bought the Willment car. Paul Fahey's car was indeed an FVA and raced in NZ in that form for it's first season, but was then fitted with an FVC. Peter Sundberg was next in the line of owners and also did well with the car. In '74 Bryan Blackberry was entered in an FVC Escort, but I don't know if it's the same one. Now for the Cologne Capri's. It was reported that Ford sent two RS 2600's to Japan for the Fuji 500, One for Jochen Mass/Dieter Glemser (eventual winners) and the other for Alan Moffat/Toine Hezemans. It seems that it was one of these cars that came to NZ for Fahey, but not sure which one. |

Dates: If the initial report is right the Fuji 500 race that led to Fahey's buying his RS 2600 was in '73 and it was shipped late that year.
He entered it at the Pukekohe Jan '74 intl. |

I've just noticed that on Klaus Tweddell´s site, the link to the Ford Cologne/Köln Escorts page, doesn't work on at least two browsers I tried. The original link was:

Fahey's FVA-engined Escort made its debut at Pukekohe in November 1969 and is referred to as an Alan Mann car in the Motorman report.
The Jim Carney-owned Escort Twin Cam that Jim Richards drove made its debut at Christmas/New Year 1969 meeting at Bay Park still in its Willment livery. It was described in Motorman as being the car that Mike Crabtree drove to fifth place in the 1969 British saloon car championship. |

The Motorman is a very good source for us in NZ. Thanks for digging that info out. And, it is possible that Paul Fahey FVA was both Ex Alan Mann and ex Cologne Team, but reading between the lines i'm guessing it was just Ex Alan Mann. Now, where did those Capri's go ? |

Bruce, not sure if you've got this info or not. Probably do by now. Fahey Capri, was sold to Grant Walker, then Inky Tulloch who fitted the Chevy V8, then John Osborne, Ross Cameron and Roger Townshend who still owns it.
As for the Halliday Capri, that was sold to a Jag enthusiast from Wellington whose name I can't recall at the moment, but with the help of Mike Hourigan fitted a V12 into it. It was quick, but I don't think it finished many races. Then John Osborne bought it, and fitted the Chevy V8 from his ex Coppins Camaro. At some point the Capri caught fire, and burnt to the ground. That's when he bought the ex Fahey car off Tulloch. |

Back to the FVA Escorts, I just found out that the sister car to Gardner's championship winning Alan Mann car went to the U.S. It was to be prepared by Holman Moody for under two litre Trans Am, but Ford lost enthusiasm for the project. It was sprayed in blue and white and then pushed into a corner at H-M.
Then Ford was looking for a car for Australia and brought it out here where it raced in Sports Sedans. Resprayed in red, it was raced by Allan Moffat for a couple of years before being re-engined with a BDA. I wonder where it is now? http://www.allanmoffat.com.au/again/cars_escort.htm |

Thanks Steve and Beejay, That pretty much answers my original question. Sad that the Halliday car burnt as it was a very quick car. I think I saw a pic recently of Roger Townshend in the restored Capri. Only a small pic but very encouraging.
