BRW 200 Rich list

http://www.brw.com.au/freearticle.aspx?docId=26572

Here is BRW rich 200 list for 2004. Plenty of Motor Racing names on it can you pick them?

Plus I was shocked to find a guy I shared a house with at uni, family broken in too the list this year with over $200 mill. I tried his first wine and it wasn't flash but apparently the Americans love his family’s new range of wines.

Where abouts is Paul Ramsay? He's been in the Top 50 of Australia's Richest for years. Paul Ramsay owns Ramsay Health, owners of a chain(?) of private hospitals.

Those who go back that far (like Grimace) will know of Paul as sponsor and benefactor of race drivers going back to the 60s. He owned and sponsored Porsches driven by Pete Geoghegan, Bill Brown and others. I believe he financed the Geoghegan 'Grace Bros' XY Falcon and 'Craven Mild' Monaro. Two cars that both chewed up money at an alarming rate during their development.

Hmmm, I just realised (very cynically). Sponsor front running cars running cigarette sponsorship, then later, go into the hospital business. No. I have met Paul, and that's just the way things went. No conspiracy here at all.

I thought it was Laurie O'Neill that funded the Porsches and the Monaro? I take it that Paul Ramsay is in no way related to Malcolm?

Malcolm as in Birrana, and the Kingswood improved production car? Don't know, but I doubt it. Paul's a Sydney boy and Malcolm's from Adelaide. Still, that doesn't mean much, and all men are brothers - and these two share the same name.

Laurie O'Neil was another great supporter of motor sport. Peterbilt trucks, wasn't it? The Geoghegan's seemed to attract these people. I think Paul took over where Laurie left off.

Interesting choice of words there "Funded" indeed

A loan was the way it should be described, as opposed to a proper patronage

The BRW Rich 200 should be viewed cautiously.

Many people who should be on it aren't and the estimated wealth for these people is just that, estimated.

I just missed out again, only 99.9% short of making this list!

Maybe they should do a 'Rich 18,000,000', then I would have a chance!

Indeed, Sol. One would think that Mr Craig Gore would be close to qualifying.

There are 4 or 5 others who I can think of, but won't name, who should come close to qualifying for the BRW 200 Rich List.

In NZ, it never ceases to amaze me as to who gets left out.....

Intersting to see Ross Palmer listed with $188 million. The interest on that much would pay for the whole procar circus I would think...

Having worked with Ian Anelzark and John Sheppard (Geoghegan mechanics) back in the late '60s and early '70s, I have a fair idea. I wish I could remember the surname of the red-headed Mick who was crew-chief in the Castrol Mustang era. Being a neighbour of Ian Geoghegan from '84 to '94 when he lived in Yaraan Avenue, Epping in Sydney, I had quite a few neighbourly motor-sport chats with him.

You could be right when you say "YOU WILL NEVER KNOW" (sorry 'bout your caps), but I do know a bit about the Total Oil sponsorship, and the later Castrol sponsorship. I also know the guy at Castrol who did the Castrol deal. I also knew Laurie O'Neil when he lived in Strathfield (on the corner of Albyn Road and The Boulevarde) back in the same '60s - '70s period. I lived one block down, in Woodward Avenue. I don't pretend to know Paul Ramsay (although I have met him fleetingly) - still, you could be right...

But why should he? I believe his main motivation for closing the chequebook was because everyone got into the habit of expecting him to stump up for more. The current iteration of PROCAR puts the onus back onto the teams to help make it happen. A good wake-up call I reckon...
