Some great memories in that article - good to see that so many have given him their support in the comments section too.
A great guy - hope that he can get through his current level of illness and get back to his old self soon. |

DE was always ethusiastic about what he commentated on, not just loud for the sake of it (you listening Diffey?)

Did he used to do motorsport commentary on Channel 9 in the mid 1990's or so?

So true. I heard about this yesterday. So sad, hopefully his true mates stick by him through this troubling time. Sounds like he has got a good fight left in him.

I ran into him in the Terrigal newsagency a couple of years ago and was stunned how his health had deteriorated.
Cheers big fella. Love your enthusiasm...... |

in that time he presented their coverage of F1, 500cc, touring cars, CART, NASCAR etc... He also raced , in the early 70s racing a Leyland P76 in Queensland touring car events (there was an article on it in a recent AMC) |

It seems like only yesterday that Darrell Eastlake was hosting the Formula One telecasts.
I liked his enthusiastic style and I wish him all the best with his health issues. Footage of him from 1998: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi6AY7rAOno |

Wow, that is sad to hear.
I recall all the years of DE and AJ broadcasting the F1... those two were great together. Keep fighting Big Man! |

Very sad to see him that way.
He was an Australia Day ambassador at the town I grew up in. I met him at a dinner the first night and as I had my Benetton Team shirt on so he was very happy to talk to me. Next morning I ended up eating breaky with him and his wife. Great guy and very down to earth. I also remember him commentating the surf life saving races, great stuff. All the best. |

Big Daz. What he lacked in knowledge of what he was commentating, he sure made up for in enthusiasm.
Oh no! He's put the biffo back into the bingle! |

Very sad and I wish him well.
But lets not sugar coat it, as a motorsport commentator he was terrible. Saying things loud doesn't make it better. With rugby he was fine, weightlifting fantastic, but with motorsport he was abysmal. Nonetheless, hope you get well soon Darrell. |

He can't have been that bad, Leigh Diffey and Mathew White have certainly based their style on him.
