UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 @ Las Vegas NEXTEL Cup Event Thread *SPOILERS*
Early bird gets the worm. The entry list is up and features 55 drivers.
Aric Almirola, Jon Wood and, of course, A.J. Allmendinger will be looking to qualify for their first Cup race. Wood will be driving the #21, and as such is guaranteed a starting spot. Ken Schrader will move to the #47 for this race and will have to qualify on speed. Almirola will be driving a Gibbs Racing Chevy and should as such have a decent shot at qualifying. This race will be the first race on the new banking, up to 20 degrees from 12 degrees in the past. The 'front straight' and back straight are now both banked 9 degrees (up from 8 degrees and 3 degrees in the past). For me personally it's the first time I'm really looking forward to seeing a race at Las Vegas. |

If the improvement is as good as what happened @ Miami, then i'm looking forward to it also.

Martin still in the #01, Regan Smith in a #39 Ginn Chevy... a sign of things to come?

As for Martin, Las Vegas and Atlanta have been on his previously announced part time schedule all along. Bristol which comes after that, however, is supposed to be his first race as a spectator. |

If you check the photo gallery at www.lvms.com you can see some pics of the renovations. Apparently Tony Stewart isn't too impressed with the track changes. Since I have Juan Pablo and Denny Hamlin on my nextel fantasy team, another 1-2 finish would be nice, at least then the points would count!

You'd think that to make sure Regan Smith could get some more cup experience that whenever he and Mark Martin are running the same race they could put Mark in the #39 seeing as he'd probably have a better chance of running a faster qualifying time, then Regan would have an automatic spot in the #01?

As for the track it will be interesting to see how the combination of progressive banking + narrower track surface + blistering speed plays out. |

A strong 4th place qualifying effort from JPM! Michael Waltrip does not qualify for the second consecutive race and AJ Allmendinger narrowly misses making his first cup race despite being the second fastest Toyota. AJ and Waltrip will be in huge holes now with regards to cracking the top 35, as AJ has not made a race and Waltrip actually has negative points due to his 100 point penalty.
Notables 1. Kahne 4. Montoya 5. J.Burton 11. Blaney (by far the best Toyota) 14. Mark Martin 20. Harvick 23. Johnson 25. Stewart 28. Junior 38. J. Gordon (speedwise) 39. Kenseth (speed) 42. Newman (speed) 47. Jarrett (speed) |

Great qualifying for Montoya
Also worth noting is that Jon Wood will make his first career start as well. |

Ooh, that looks promising but it can all fall apart as noted at Daytona!
I can't wait for this race, it should be way better than previous Vegas meetings. |

My man's getting there ain't he?!
However as you say knowlesy anything can heppen in a race. Qualifying well is one thing but keeping up a consistent pace over a distance is what Juan needs most of all. Once he starts doing that, he's going to be in amongst em!! |

NASN (Setanta Ireland) show the race live from 20:00 I recall. So get onto TVU in time for that and you should be OK.
Channel 5 highlights after midnight Monday. |

Hehehehe.....
AJ is in a real hole now. I bet he regrets this move he has made. Well no, actually, he probably doesn't as he probably has a new mansion and yacht as a result. |

It isn't just Allmendinger that is in a hole. Toyota in general seems to be in a hole. Red Bull racing has one collective start, granted it resulted in a good finish. Mayfield hasn't made a race yet, Waltrip has missed two in a row, and Jarrett may use up all of his champions provisionals. All of the teams that are not in the top-35 now which is all but Jarrett's team will have a very hard time making the points back up and may end up needing to qualify on speed most of the season.
It really doesn't look good for them right now. J.D. |

Are the top 35 on points adjusted after every 5 races?

Also: Drivers are reporting that it's super grippy with low grip tyres, meaning they are sliding lots.
Produced some great racing in the Busch though... |
