GP3 2010 R1 Catalunya
I personally am looking forward to seeing how this inaugural season turns out, especially with the the nice spread of drivers from around the world involved in the series. There is a fair amount of quality amongst those 30 drivers and I am particularly excited as a Canadian that both Wickens and Morad are racing in a series that has the potential to lead to better things.

Very surprising session. Nigel Merker & Pal Varhaug on 1st row, drying track...
Can't post the times from GP3's site, because they're very weirdly edited & it takes lots of space. |

All I can say is that Robert Wickens is the best genuine home grown Canadian to have a legitimate chance in F1 since Gilles Villeneuve. Yes I know Jacques was world champion but he essentially grew up in Europe. This kid has what it takes and he grew up in Canada.
Here are the official results. Newgarden and Lopez have been penalized for Race 2 for causing on track incidents (http://www.gp3series.com/news/2010-m...den-and-Lopez/) POS NO DRIVER ENTRANT 1 23 Pal VARHAUG Jenzer Motorsport 2 4 Robert WICKENS Status Grand Prix 3 2 Esteban GUTIERREZ Art Grand Prix 4 15 Dean SMITH Carlin 5 28 Jean-Eric VERGNE Tech 1 Racing 6 24 Simon TRUMMER Jenzer Motorsport 7 16 Lucas FORESTI Carlin 8 1 Alexander ROSSI Art Grand Prix 9 7 James JAKES Manor Racing 10 21 Miki MONRAS MW Arden 11 27 Daniel JUNCADELLA Tech 1 Racing 12 3 Pedro NUNES Art Grand Prix 13 25 Nico MULLER Jenzer Motorsport 14 30 Oliver OAKES Atech CRS GP 15 11 Renger VAN DER ZANDE RSC Mucke Motorsport 16 19 Mirko BORTOLOTTI Addax Team 17 12 Tobias HEGEWALD RSC Mucke Motorsport 18 22 Leonardo CORDEIRO MW Arden 19 5 Ivan LUKASHEVICH Status Grand Prix 20 8 Rio HARYANTO Manor Racing 21 9 Adrian QUAIFE-HOBBS Manor Racing 22 26 Doru SECHELARIU Tech 1 Racing Not Classified 29 Patrick REITERER Atech CRS GP 14 Josef NEWGARDEN Carlin 18 Pablo SANCHEZ LOPEZ Addax Team 20 Michael CHRISTENSEN MW Arden 10 Nigel MELKER RSC Mucke Motorsport 6 Daniel MORAD Status Grand Prix 17 Felipe GUIMARAES Addax Team 31 Vittorio GHIRELLI Atech CRS GP |

Good stuff by many drivers improving upon grid positions, I mentioned in the pre-season thread that Jenzer must be doing themselves a favour with Varhaug and Trummer staying on with them when they've already achieved success together. But what I don't get is the pace of Nigel Melker. IIRC, he was barely a midfield runner in Formula Renault, yet he claimed pole against a whole host of international drivers with several championships amongst them. How can you be like 20th in FR and then get pole in GP3?

Does anyone one know if there's any kind of cable or dish feed for GP3 for us here in the U.S. -- As an American I want to see if Alex Rossi can actually compete with these excellent drivers from the rest of the world - weve had so many dissapointments. They do great in the states and then they end up being slightly better than average when they go to Europe -- and that's no way to get into F1 -- His move from the back was stellar -- but I've been dissapointed too many times for too many years -- But is it possible that finally America has actually produced a very talented open wheel road racer???

Dominated actually! And Wickens is leading the championship so it was a good weekend for North Americans in Europe.

During Speed's coverage of the GP2 race this morning they mentioned the two US drivers in GP3 by name but didn't even mention the fact that Rossi had won Race 2! Maybe we can convince Speed to air a GP3 highlights package in between their non-stop NASCAR coverage (Sounds of Nascar, Nascar trivia, Nascar news, some stupid talent show judged by Nascar personell). We can only hope can't we.... |

- Does anyone know where the races can be viewed (UK, so that might be a stupid question)... - What is the general consensus on the racing? I was quite excited to see the start of this series so disappointed to have missed it, was the action good!? Thanks, and good to see Wickens doing well, I have always been a fan and that only increased after seeing how he handled the Red Bull departure! |

Well it was scheduled to be shown on Eurosport2 yesterday evening about 7ish, but I missed it so have no idea if they did show it?
I suspect it will be repeated again this week, i'll check the guide. Seems like there was some interesting racing out there though? Kudos to Rossi for earning the chance to dominate race 2 with that first race recovery. Few people I thought might be closer to the front weren't and like runshaw i'm a bit concerned that a previously unfancied driver like Melker got on the pace. Also Van Der Zande must be disappointed with his weekend as would people like Hegewald I'd guess? Dean Smith seems to have put in too very solid drives though. Maybe it's early days? |

Not that it will help us out in the short term but Speed TV have announced Speed2 which will focus primarily on international racing series so hopefully GP3 will be part of the schedule. They have specified that they will be covering F2 and the F3 Euro Series amongst a whole slew of other series like BTCC and DTM so maybe there is hope for us in North America!
