2019 Australian GT Championship

The CAMS Australian GT Championship will be contested over seven rounds this year and again incorporate the Australian Endurance Championship (AEC).

As was the case in 2018, there will be three endurance rounds which will count towards both titles, although these now fall in succession from Rounds 3 to 5.

The GT4 Championship and CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series classes will also race in the field for the four sprint rounds which make up the balance of the calendar.

2019 CAMS Australian GT Championship calendar:

1 Albert Park Formula 1 Grand Prix Sprint Mar 14-17
2 Barbgallo Virgin Australia Supercars Sprint May 2-4
3 Phillip Island Shannons Nationals Endurance Jun 7-8
4 The Bend Shannons Nationals Endurance Jul 12-13
5 Sandown Shannons Nationals Endurance Sep 20-21
6 Surfers Paradise Virgin Australia Supercars Sprint Oct 25-27
7 Sandown Virgin Australia Supercars Sprint Nov 8-10
NC Challenge Bathurst Super Sprint Nov 28 - Dec 1

Returning entrants so far include Audi Customer Sport Racing with 2 cars, Jim Manolios with a Lamborghini, Tony Quinn with an Aston Martin, David Crampton with a KTM GT4.

Isnt it quite late in the off season to only have 5 cars confirmed?

Looks like a tiny grid likely again?

To be fair, the above are the only formal announcements that I could find.

On social media, there has also been chat around Fraser Ross, Peter Hackett, Scott Taylor, Liam Talbot, Tony Bates, Adrian Deitz, Yasser Shahin, Mark Griffiths and Justin McMillian.

So no need to think the worst at this stage.

More likely to see it in the regular championship, assuming the catagory management/control tyre supplier can bring the price of rubber back to reality

This may have been covered earlier however some prospects in the local GT4 scene

Rushbrook said that more than 30 Mustang GT4s have been produced for Europe thus far, despite having no target sales figures. The global expansion of the Mustang GT4 isn’t limited to Europe, though. After completing demonstration laps during the Bathurst 1000 weekend last year, a Mustang GT4 was sold to a customer for the Australian GT Championship.

Chances of it actually racing in Aus GT, though?

Plenty of GT4 cars in the country, racing elsewhere...

Aussie Driver Search semi-pro winner Lee Partridge will make his national-level racing debut in Australian GT at Albert Park next month.
Partridge, who won $150,000 for taking out the semi-pro class last year, will spend some of that money on running ADS' Audi GT3 car on Australian Grand Prix weekend.

It will make his national-level debut, as well as being his first competitive outing in the V10-powered Audi, which is fresh from racing at the Bathurst 12 Hour.

“It’s a dream come true to not only compete in the Australian GT class, but to do it in my home town at the Australian Grand Prix,” said Partridge.

Smart move, cashing in his "money" and getting to drive something before it all falls over.

Reigning Intercontinental GT Challenge Bronze Driver’s Champion Kenny Habul leads an impressive array of Mercedes-AMG entries into the opening round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship on the streets of Melbourne next weekend, the US-based Australian campaigning a Scott Taylor Motorsport prepared AMG GT3 alongside 2017 CAMS Australian Endurance Champion Peter Hackett and reigning Endurance Champion Max Twigg.

For Australian fans it is expected that the Grand Prix won’t be the only time we will see Habul, with plans for the Mercedes regular to contest both the Gold Coast and Sandown sprint events alongside Supercars.

Habul won’t be the only driver campaigning a Scott Taylor Motorsport [STM] AMG though, with returning Australian Endurance Champion Max Twigg jumping back behind the wheel of the WM Waste machine for the Sprint rounds. 2018 team-mate Tony D’Alberto will then re-join Twigg for the Australian Endurance Championship events to defend their 2018 title, campaigning the car that Supercar team-mates Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Shane Van Gisbergen drove in this year’s 12 Hour, whilst Habul will be back in the #75 SunEnergy1 Racing AMG GT3 12 Hour entry which was in fact Twigg’s championship winning mount from 2018.

The third member of the Mercedes-AMG squad for the Australian Grand Prix is arguably the category’s most experienced campaigner – Eggleston Motorsport driver Peter Hackett, the Melbourne-local having made his AGP debut in 2010, a venue where he has a number of podium finishes to his name, although unlike Max Twigg (two wins in 2010), he is yet to grace the top step at Albert Park.

A good sign that Twigg and Hackett are returning for the sprint and endurance series along with Habul for select rounds.

New category management this year so will have to see how AGT goes. Lot's of stories going around right now about unrest in the series, long-term manager gone, higher number of tyres per race weekend, range of things really. The word "cluster" being used regularly in regard to what has been happening.
Hopefully a case of a new category manager shaking things up a bit and making changes rather than any long-term problems.
