I always thought he was quite good, and did a good job in the Lotus. I think the big problem he had was the current cars, in as much as they just do not suit his driving style at all.

apparently, one of his first jobs was to fill in at minardi in the early 90s, and was listed as failing to impress. he had about 4 races, and was quickly replaced.

Take his lap times in the wet (always a good yardstick). 5th fastest at Adelaide '91 in the Jordan 191. 4th fastest at Donnington '93. He also got 4th fastest lap at Imola that year (this was in the Lotus, not the most competitive car in the field) and he ran competitively elsewhere aswell.

He was seriously bad in 1993 but I believe it was the car and not him. A Lola, wasn't it? And he was nearly killed in it.

Zanardi was at Lotus in 1993. The accident was at Spa in Friday morning practice. He totally wrecked his Lotus in a high speed accident in the famous Eau rogue corner. As Senna approached the crash site he had to avoid a slowing Andretti and Zanardi’s Lotus by purposefully spinning his McLaren into the barrier. I remeber it well. Tris |

A lot of unexpected things happened in 99, but one thing you could count on was Zanardi having a sh1t weekend. I think Montoya will be different though.

i hope Monty well! i tried to watch the CART race last week to see the future F1 driver in action, and was disappointed to see him out by the first corner.
Could anyone suggest to whom his character as well as driving style resemble? |

While I agree with all of the above, the comparison of past events/drivers/cars with next year is not (in my belief) sound. Witness Damon Hill. Was he great. Yes. Did he adapt to less grip with narrow track and grooved tires - no. AleX Zinardi was a good F1 Driver which made him a great Champ/Indy car driver. Montoya was a good F1 tester which made him a great Champ/Indy car driver. Jenson Button would appear to be a great F1 driver. Frank Williams would appear to downplay the role of the driver...
