Is Mike Gascoyne overrated?
In my opinion, yes. VERY overrated.
With the same engine and tyres, Lotus and RedBull fare much better. When he was at Toyota, he had an unlimited budget, yet, they never won a race. The couple of races won at Jordan were the fruit of circumstances... |

They may well have the same engine and tyres as Red Bull and Lotus, they may even share some extra components with Red Bull on top of that, but I am pretty sure Mike Gascoyne has nowt to do with this years Caterham F1 car, or last years for that matter, didn't he get moved sideways into the road car side of the operation?

Well I for one am shocked that Red Bull and Lotus, with their much larger budgets and significantly better drivers, are outpacing Caterham.

If anybody is expecting Gascoygne to be another Newey, well there's only one Newey.
He's had a decent career, produced some cars that have won races and been a significant figure in some high profile teams. Now it seems, the boot is on the other foot, so to speak. |

TBF to Gascoyne, at Toyota every time he wanted to do anything he had to subject his decisions to a formal committee/board of directors for ratification. When he objected Toyota got rid of him. That is no way to build F1 cars, specially prior to the set in stone technical era we are now in. You do know of course, a camel is a racehorse designed by a committee. |

Its easy to criticise the new teams, and question their performances, but the 3 new teams (now 2) agreed to join up when there was a proposed slashing of F1 budgets, which actually never happened. Unless you understand this, you will not understand why they are where they are on the grid.
Caterham budget: £50m Red Bull budget: £200-300 million |

Some of his Toyotas were alright, potentially a race winning car in 2005. The 1999 Jordan was very neat too. In his defence, sort of.

It's possible he lost his way with the 2009 rules. Brawn maybe to a lesser extent too - nothwithstanding that he did win the WC in 2009!

Didn't Gascoyne design, or heavily influenced the design, of Alonso's first title winner?

In defence of MG, he is a better F1 designer than everyone here, and 99.9999999% of the world population.
If you are in the top 50 worldwide in your chosen path/career, you could never be 'overrated'. |

That's about right ! It defines why this thread is "overrated"...

Noone of us are making that claim insofar as I know. Mike Gascoyne is making that claim for himself - thus he leaves himself open to critique as regards his performances in that role. |
