1978/1979 Bathuirst videos
Had a request from a friend about the 1978-1979 Bathurst telecasts. I can remember while Beta was expensive when it was launched, some recorders were available unless I am corrected. I can help him from 1980 onwards but have had no luck with people saying they have got it on beta but not materialising as it can be converted.I would like to watch them myself! Any thoughts?

In 1983 Channel 7 released a VHS tape of highlights of the 1979, 1980, 1981 & 1982 races. I have only every seen one copy of it (at a video store in the outer east of Melbourne about ten years ago) so you would have to be very lucky to find it anywhere.
Unfortunately the current Chevron catalog does not include all of the tapes released by Channel Seven over the years. There are tapes of the 1984 Bathurst, the 1986 ATCC (both of which I have), the 1987 ATCC, the 1991 ATCC and the 1992 ATCC. The latter two were never available in Australia but can be ordered through Duke Video in the UK. Best of luck with your search. |

I've got a series of highlight tapes that cover Bathurst from the begining (I think it starts when it was at PI as the Armstrong 500) up to about '94 or '95. There's about 4 VHS tapes all enclosed in a case. I can have a look at it (it's in a in cupboard) if your interested in more details.

I have a 23 minutes videotape from the 1977 Bathurst Race. It is call "Ford 1 - 2" and I bought it from Top Gear 6 or 7 years ago.
I was watching it last night. Allan Grice gave Moffat a run for his money in the early part of the race. Moffat finally got him at the end of Conrod in a brilliant move. I have never seen anyone else doing this. Grice kept out breaking him at the end of Conrod. So, he passed him with Colin Bond in tow. He then moved in front of Grice and let Bond pass him. In doing so, Grice went from first to third. There was a lot of controversy about Moffat winning that race instead of Bond. People easily forget the amount of money that Moffat had put into that race to make it all happen. They also disregard the fact that he had to nurse that big falcon for the last 12 laps while everyone was writing him off. Funny how the previous year, Morris became a hero because Fitzpatrick nursed his car around for the last 5 laps. Moffat became a bad man for doing the same. I think the controversy happened because Bond was a Holden man and he had just defected to Ford. People wanted Bond to win so they could say, "You see Moffat, it does not matter if Bond drives a Torana or one of your Falcon. He will beat you every time because he is better than you." Also have all the highlights from 67 to 85 on two videos. And I have tape just about every Bathurst since 1984 (without the ads)lol. I bought the Dick Johnson DVD a few weeks ago. It has the best filming I have seen of the Green Falcon going in the bush at the top of Conrod in 1984. |

True, that is a good video, better than the Brock-Legend andPerkins Endurance man tapes, which are still pretty good nontheless.

Moffat also did a lot for Australia motorsport. When he was **** off about something, it would say so in public and usually the racing body would fix the problem within 12 months. It made Moffat unpopular for speaking up his mind, but at the end of the day, everyone benefited from it. |
