Borg-Warner is an OEM manual transmission supplier for American automotive manufacturers. They also did some designs for Datsun and Toyota, if memory serves.

There are about half a dozen different companies today calling themselves Borg-Warner, but the original transmission manufacturing operation is still in business. I heard something about GM buying them, but I'm not sure.

If you see a Camaro, Firebird or Mustang made in the last 20 years with a stick shift, that's a Borg-Warner transmission.

They tend to be rather light on torque ratings, but wil really nice and smooth action. The T-56 6-speed they brought out in the '93 F-bodies is fantastic.

Borg-Warner is still in business and supplies all kinds of automotive goods, mainly turbos, cooling systems, and transmissions to the global market. If you want to know more here's their website. Borg-Warner

Bit of a shame that it's named after a copmpany rather than an individual (or two) who had a grezt effect on setting up the race, but never mind, I guess that's the American Way. 33 cars racing wheel-to-wheel at over 200mph for 500 miles is the American Way as well, and I've got no complaints at that!

Well Boots, we didn't have a formal aristocracy that prided itself on patronage, we had advertising. It's just how history worked itself out here.

To add to that, the pagoda style tower on the front straight is now called the "Bombardier Tower". They are a Canadian builder of mass transit systems. It's all in the money. Just ask Michael Schumacher.

The "bombardier pagoda" name associated with a sponsor...

I'm sure that you are accurate on that one...

I just didn't think about that, because during WWII the Speedway was offered for use to the military as a landing strip for aircraft, including bombers...don't know if it was actually used for that purpose, but the original Pagoda would have served as the control tower....

But now that you mention it, your expalanation is more feasible...

Bombardier has only been on the tower for a couple of years that I know of. A lot of the Indy purists hate it.

Of course the purists hate it. Bombardier is a huge Canadian comglomerate making everything from the transit systems mentioned above to aircraft and aerospace to the Ski-Doo and Sea-Doo brands of recreational vehicles. They are let's say the Yamaha of Canada.

Why do the purists hate it? Why has it been there just a couple of years? This is F1 flexing their marketing muscle at the speedway.

Sorry, but the airplane thing made me lol

The purist would have hated any corporate logo on the tower. Indy is sacred ground to many. The fact that Bombardier is merely foreign adds to it. From a marketing point it is excellent for Bombardier, who is obviously trying get more of the US market. The longer Bombardier holds on to it the better the purist will feel. If it starts changing every two years, people will really start to gripe.
