Continuous AF or pre-focus?
Which method do you use most for track shots - continuous autofocus or pre-focus on a fixed point and firing the shutter when the subject reaches it?
I used to try both but neither was particularly easy with dodgy eyesight and no dioptre correction on the camera. Nor did I have a fast-focussing lens. I believe most pros use the pre-focus method and learn how far ahead (in milliseconds, of course) they should fire the shutter to compensate for any lag. |

pre focus. my camera lens combination doesn't work together at all so i use the light meter on the camera (then under expose it by about 3 stops), pre focus, and adjust from there.
my nikon autofocus is useless, you get some great clear rear wings... |

Bit of both- depends on light, type of shot and lense.

As a very amateur just getting started...depends.. my shorter lense has a super quick autofocus, so I can do so with good results if close and the car's not moving too fast.. My brand new 300 lense is obviously much slower, but still pretty quick...so we'll see...but my bet is pre-focusing will be necessary. We'll see...

With my Canon Rebel, all manual focus with pre-focus ont he area. With practice it gets easier.
On my Olympus digital, manual for ultra fast action with an occasional autofocus thrown in. |

Pre Focus or Manual Focus, don't have AF. Next camera will have it.
Sometimes I adjust the focus during the pan, but even by missing the shoot point by a fraction, you can get unexpected results |

I used to pre focus and got good results with a bit of practice on my 801.
I now have a D100 and 70-300 zoom. It has predictive auto focus which is the dogs bits for fast moving cars. |

I've just been experimenting a bit with the follow through focussing feature on my Nikon using the 500mm lens, so this season is the first time I've ever really used the Nikon for trackside shots. I was finding at Silverstone that it would lose focus very easily just as I was taking the photo. Still to see what my Snetterton pics will turn out like - that'll also be the first time I've had a black and white film in for photographing cars.
With the Pentax I've always pre-focussed. |
