'On this day'

Once again I wake up to rubbish from this column. 'Last F1 race at Aintree 1962' Sorry, but I went to excellent F1 events there in 1963 & 64. Can someone tell the person who compiles this about non championship races.

Thank you, Rob. Not often I get in from work to find that other posters have sent me thread-warning emails.

In the compiler's defence, he is not only not an F1 specialist, but is not even based in the UK.

And perhaps it would be nice if in future any errors or omissions could be raised in a PM or at least in a slightly more constructive tone? We are all volunteers here, we try to get things right, but none of us is Doug Nye.

Except Doug Nye of course...

I'm not a journalist, but I have read the old journalist's maxim:
If in doubt, find out
If you can't find out - leave out

On all the historical forums I follow at least once a month someone points out that "Formula 1", "Grand Prix racing" and "World Drivers' Championship" are not synonymous.

There is absolutely no excuse for anyone who claims to be an historian, even an amateur one, to get it wrong!

Sorry if that upsets some people, but facts are facts.

Well, I left the thread open because I didn't want anyone to suggest that I wasn't giving anyone the right to reply.

However, it is quite clear that my point has been missed, so I will reiterate.

My attention was drawn to this thread by other forum members using the "warn" button. They felt that however factually correct the original post was in raising the problem with events "on this day", the point was made rudely.

I agreed with the concerns of those other forum members. I hope these concerns will be taken on board in the spirit in which they were intended. I would also add that the individual who oversees the feature has not contacted me about the offending post.

I will reiterate. Corrections or additions to On This Day - PM please.

Thread closed.
