Saved! (Penske Who?)
Who says prayers aren't answered?
If we're going to bandy about unsubstantiated rumours, here's the one I'm concentrating on! [Penske who?] HURRAH! ================ Zonta leaving formula1? Recent rumours have suggested that Jordan's 2001 third driver, Ricardo Zonta, is on his way out of formula1 next season. The Brazilian is thought to be heading to CART, with the possibility that Jean Alesi may take his place after announcing his retirement when he was rejected for the race seat in Japan. Press reports have stated that Zonta had told daily newspaper AS he was to race in CART, but when approached by formula1.com his manager appeared to deny that this was the case. "Regarding the rumours, all I can say is that f1 is the priority," he said. A Jordan spokeswoman stated: "We haven't made any decisions in regards to our full driver line-up and Eddie is talking to a number of people." She was not able to say whether Zonta was among the drivers being considered for the role. Zonta first entered formula1 as a test driver for Jordan in 1997, he then acted as a development driver for McLaren the following year, before spending two years racing alongside Jacques Villeneuve at BAR. Despite some points scoring finishes, he was not able to better Villeneuve and lost confidence after a number of heavy crashes. His return to Jordan this year as a test driver had been designed to restore his confidence and return him to racing full-time in the series. However, he did not shine in testing and made mistakes on the two occasions he was asked to race for the team. His highest finish this year was seventh in the Canadian Grand Prix, deputising for an injured Heinz-Harald Frentzen. |

Liz,
I'm reading this after having a few beers. But buggered if I can make sense of it. Zonta is a washed out three times unlucky F1 driver. CART's saviour? And the reference to Jean? Where is it all leading? |

Erm, to my running off with Zonta?
No, I think it is actually leading to Jean Alesi getting Zonta's job at Jordan and Zonta going back to sports cars where he will no doubt be much happier as he has enjoyed success there. But since everyone round here is so busy touting unsubstantiated rumours as truth, I thought I'd throw the "Zonta to Champ Cars" rumour into the mix, as it's much more cheerful than what's been rumoured lately. |
