Woolies + BP not Caltex
Interesting development with BP buying the Woolies sites rather than the foreshadowed deal with previous supplier Caltex.
Any thoughts opn how this is going to effect sponsoship and supply deal for the sport? We are talking VERY big bucks in retail throughput so it has to make the marketing people in the oil companies do some reviewing of strategy. |

All is not quite what it appears in the fuel retail space.. maybe someone will write an article about who actually owns who, and where the product is supplied from.
Petrol stations aren't petrol stations any more. Somehow the retailers have convinced us we can do the weekly shop in there, and get discounts on the fuel as well. From a strategy perspective, BP has just bought itself access to the Woolworths national distribution system (leaving Metcash & others behind...) as well as securing additional volumes through either one of its overseas plants, or perhaps as supplied thru Caltex Singapore already, so the local Caltex brand may still get a piece of it. A reported 3.5bn litres of fuel sold annually thru the Caltex/Woolworths alliance (more thru the Caltex-branded sites) is nothing to sneeze at. . While Caltex has just taken over Gull Petroleum's retail outlets in NZ... There will have to be rationalisation in the space somewhere... overlaps of sites, some existing BP ones not suitable for Woolworths Metro at BP fitouts... What does it do to motor racing? Perhaps BP will revert from advertising its oil sponsorship (Castrol) of Prodrive, to a BP branding instead.. Perhaps Caltex will choose another product brand to promote rather than Vortex.. Mr Ingall used to promote Havoline back in the day.. And who's to say that the 7/11-Mobil alliance wont show up at WP sometime in the future... While Viva Energy gets the benefit for its retail sites for the Shell V-Power branding of DJRTP... While Mega Energy just popped up for Mr Bright's new deal.. |
