The 2003 season
What are your final thoughts on the 2003 season? It was a lot more entertaining than 2001/2002 and it was good to see some new winners(Alonso, Fisichella, Raikkonen) and some mid-grid teams getting up there. Ultimately I'm ecstatic at Michael's sixth title and it was a special achievement because he really had to fight back to get it. I think the wins in Imola and Monza were the making of this title. Raikkonen was consistent but he just didn't win enough. He was never going to be champ with only one victory.

A great season after many dull ones. The Championship was trully open right down to the wire and we've seen some inspired drives from many people. If 2004 is as good as this I'll be more than content

Season 2003. A very closely fought season.
Ferrari had a bad start of the season, and faced many up and downs. Michael came through from a few bad races to notch up some of the most impressive races in his career. And we have the young guns joining the fight. It's pleasing to realise that with the last great driver of the late 90s generation nearing the end of his career, we had the future of F1, in terms of driver quality, secured with the new generation of quality young swordsman. Alonso, Webber, Kimi and the not that young Montoya. It's a closely fought season, and the results are pretty fair reflection of how each driver fare. In the end, the best still won no doubt. But the chasing packs of drivers and teams are also accurately rewarded for their effort in the points. It's one great season. Tense and on the edge, difficult and challenging. And it makes the achievements all the more satisfying - the best emerged from the rest. Congratulation to the amazing 6WDC. And congratulation to Ferrari to pull back to 3 consecutive race wins to end a season with 8wins. I'd miss F1 for the next 5 months. But i'd be anticipating it. |

Yeah, bit of a funny thing to say Dani, kind of vindicating my thoughts that Schu fans are just fans of winning with the racing itself being an inconvenience.

One of the most competitive and unpredictable seasons in a long time.
What will we see happen in 2004? |

Overall, I'm glad to be able to say that F1 has been totally re-invigorated this year. It has been thrilling from when the lights went out in Melbourne to the chequered flag earlier this morning in Japan. It's been a few years since I've enjoyed a season like this - long may it continue!
We've seen some new winners this year and had a sneak preview of what the future holds. Raikkonen, Montoya and Alonso all showed great strength and it was only bad luck that robbed Kimi in the end. In what was quite clearly the third best car out there, he almost snatched the title. How costly that engine failure at the Nurburgring? We've had four competitive teams at the sharp end of the grid this year and you've got to hand it to Williams, McLaren and Renault - they closed the gap to Ferrari, not the rules. Congratulations to Michael Schumacher on his sixth world title. I was hoping he wouldn't win the title this year, yet at the end of the day I'm very happy. It is a magnificent achievement and probably his best title, having to really fight for it. Certainly, it's up there with his 2000 championship. Most people will say that F1 is boring because Schuey has won it again, but when you've had a season as good as this who cares? I'd happily watch Schuey win it again if the racing was this good. Roll on Melbourne 2004! It's gonna be a long winter! Here's to a fantastic 2003 season!! |

2003 has been the best season of F1 for some time with a lot of unpredictable results & the title actually going to a decider but the thing i enjoyed most from the season was the emergence of the younger brigade in Raikkonen, Alonso & Webber showing everyone that F1 does have a great future in the years to come.

2002 was 0/10.
2003 was 8/10. Just proves that people don't dislike F1 because "Ferrari win all the time" |

Best season since 1999 at least, if not further back.
Seven different winners, including three new winners in Raikkonen, Fisichella and Alonso. Add to that impressive performances from Mark Webber and the future of F1 is in bright hands. A strong challenge from Williams and McLaren for most of the season never gave Ferrari breathing room. At one stage Williams looked like taking both titles until late-season falters. McLaren, with a year old car, were brilliant. Renault shook the establishment with a quick, nimble car. Jaguar were reliable though lacked ultimate pace and Webber put the car places it shouldn’t have been. BAR took 5th overall but never ultimately impressed. The rest really made up the numbers, with only occasional impressive performances from Toyota and Sauber. Jordan had a season to forget despite the win while Minardi… Well, they continue to try their best. IMO the new rules worked, particularly the qualifying rules which mixed up the grid and made the races far more interesting. The new points system might need an overhaul, but I’d keep the points down to 8th. |

what we need next year is a few more teams so we can have 22-26 cars on the grid then the good old days will be well and truly back.

Definitely a good season with some young talent challenging Michael. He really had to work for it, and that was good to see. Renault came on very well too. And, most importantly, we actually had some great RACING and a fair amount of overtaking! I'd still change some of the rules, but for the moment I can live with a season like that! |

I have been feeling sorry for Kimi a bit, he deserved the championship this year, but for JPM and even RS as well, it just slipped away from them in either catastrophic failures, (Kimi - Europe) or little things, (JPM - San Marino) just slipping away. But again, MS had his little problems (Germany puncture, Silverstone probs).
But then again, i have to praise McLaren for two main things. - Having such good speed out of a 2 year old car. Comg from a year where they were a distant third, to nearly winning the thing. Basically a 2 year old car nearly beating a less than 1 year old car to the championship. - Some great strategies of McLaren. It was obvious in places like San Marino, where Kimi qualified 6 was it? Moved his way up, and i think DC did similar things. Nicely masked lack of speed, or qualifying blunders. Last edited by twig; 12 Oct 2003 at 13:38. |

Some great drivers.
Michael. Six times with a well deserved championship. Some great drives, although I wish he'd won in Suzuka to finish it off. Rubens. Best win of the year at Silverstone. And just got another good victory. Montoya. Best overtaking and speed. Loved the one into spoon. Ralf. A couple of dominant performances, however I would like more of Hung(a)ry Ralf too. Kimi. An fantastic season and one I am tempted to say did best this year. That car was not on the pace and yet he kept in there till the end. Some incredible driving. Webber. Settling in well. Button. A good solid season despite the car's reliability and other factors! Fisi. That Jordan didn't deserve to qualify so high. And it certainly didn't deserve a win. So lots of good drivers and drives - A decent season. |
