1985 Spin&Win
From americanlemans.com:
Danny Sullivan "won the Indy 500 in 1985 with the famous "Spin and Win" incident" Does anybody know what happened back there exactly? Sounds like some interesting finish, that's for sure! |

yeah, exiting on of the turns he looped the car, did a complete 360 on the straightaway, ended up facing the right direction without hitting anybody or any walls. He of course went on to win the race. They show the replay almost everywhere during the pre-race for the Indy 500.

Shouldn't this topic be discussed in the IRL forum!?

It hasn't been a part of ChampCars for the last 8 years and even if we do eventually go back their again it will NEVER be the same again....TG has ruined it for me! Just my 2 cents....

The race was part of the CART championship that season, so why not discuss it here?
Anyway, the spin and win was pretty cool. It probably has as much to do with luck as skill, but still cool nonetheless. |

Like I said, TG has ruined the Indy 500 for me.....the past, the present and the future....enough said! I would rather CART race at Michigan and Fontana....that's if they let us...

For the anti-TG crowd, the interesting thing is that not only did he kill CART, but he's taken the Indy 500 from the biggest race in the world to simply a substantial race. Attendance seems to still be good, but the TV significance has dropped massively. The more the Indy 500 loses importance, the more value the IRL loses. Who knows, if CART can keep it together and re-group maybe this fight can still be won.

Seems we can't even discuss the "Spin & Win" without turning it into a mudslinging match.

Macdaddy you are one great moderator, subtle enough, but too the point. Good job!
Raving, this goes way back in my memory banks but if I recall correctly Sullivan was in second behind Mario as the race was winding down. Sullivan kept inching closer for several laps and finally dove to the bottom of the track to pass. He went underneath the white line and made the pass but when he came back up and crossed the paint again the was a big wiggle and he made a long sweeping loop , unbelievably hitting nothing and gathering it back up after about 365 degrees. Losing the lead back to Andretti by about a quarter lap he made another charge, as I recall without stopping for tires, and after another 4 laps or so made the same pass got the same wiggle but kept it together and held on for the win. The track has been modified since then to prevent the cars from being able to dive that low as it was obviously very dangerous. |

I (vaguely) remember it, but initially I couldn't find much on the net. Was hoping to stumble across a video. At any rate, the spin was on lap 120. I believe that I have it on a VHS tape, but with no VCR at the moment...
Just so happens that Santa is bringing me a new VCR - remind me and I'll cull the video of the spin and upload it for you. |

That would have been Sullivan's 2nd Indy 500 start?
From memory he was luvcky to get away with just a 360, when the car found some grip it was ppointing towards the infield, but was able to steer it back the right way. |

I remember watchin this, Sullivan was driving under the white line to the tune of half a car width (how he wasn't penalised for technically leaving the circuit i dont know), in doing so he was driving a shorter lap than every1 else and as a result was lapping quicker. Whilst crossing the line he lost control, probably because the lines are not tarmac and dont grip anything like as much... the rest is history

Here's an account of the Spin and Win from http://f1rejects.crosswinds.net
"In Danny's own words: "For some reason, I thought there were only 12 laps left. That's why I was anxious to get by Mario. I thought that's all she wrote, but it spun around and I didn't hit anything. And all of a sudden the smoke cleared and I was facing Turn 2. So I just stuck it down and took off." His amazing 370-degree spin and save had brought out the yellows, and he took the opportunity to put on fresh tyres before chasing down Andretti once again. On lap 139 he was back on Mario's tail, and went for the turn one pass yet again. This time he pulled it off, and held on for the remaining laps to take the Borg-Warner Trophy, ahead of Mario, Roberto Guerrero, Al Unser Sr, Johnny Parsons, Johnny Rutherford, Arie Luyendyk and Michael Andretti, in what must surely rank as one of the most talented finishing orders in the history of the Indy 500. For his efforts, Danny pocketed a cool US$517,662." |

OK, so an 18 year old memory was off by 5 degrees of spin and he did take on tires. I must have gone to grab a beer during the caution.

There is also an audio clip of the anouncers call, and an image of the spin. Seeing the old red and white Miller car brings back memories. Here is the full link to the Danny Sullivan page. View the 1985 section for details.
