'the tank'
does anyone have pics of a pre-war (WWII!) French GP car with full-width 'aerodynamic' bodywork, nicknamed 'the tank'? It may be a Ballot or Voisin but I'm not sure....

Look up in Any Bugatti book they had three types of 'Tank' and won the 1939 Le Mans with one which wouldn't have looked out of date there in 1955! I will send you a piccie privately.

Well, I only know of two cars nicknamed "tank", and they were both Bugattis.
The best-known was probably the Bugatti Type 32, which competed in the 1923 French Grand Prix. http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/MHGBugattiTankT8.jpg |

Bugatti built three Type 32 Tanks in 1923. They were not very successful - a combination of short wheelbase & aerodynamic lift resulted in poor handling.
The 1936-on Type 57 Tanks were more successful - a 57S Tank won le Mans in 1937 & a 57C Tank won in 1939. 'Tanks' were built by several other manufacturers, among them Chenard-Walcker &, post-WWII, Panhard. I'm not sure about Voisin - they also built a streamlined car in 1923, but it was called the 'Laboratoire'. |
