Michael Schumacher-Driven To Extremes by James Allen
I was just wondering how many of you have read it? And what did you think of it? I thought it was quite interesting and it shows that MS is human and does make mistakes.
For those of you who don't like Michael Schumacher and who haven't read it, give it a go. You may even like MS after it. |

I think we all get driven to extremes by James Allen!
Extreme frustration, extreme annoyance, extreme boredom, extreme wishing Murray'd return, extreme wishing they'd promote Ben Edwards.... |

The most interesting part of the book for me was when he had his accident at Silverstone in 1999 and Eddie Irvines thoughts on the accident and Ferrari's explaination which was totally different from the actual evidence. Last edited by Mr V; 9 Feb 2003 at 12:27. |

From Michael Schumacher, Driven to Extreme by James Allen (After the crash........) "Ferrari later explained that a bleed nipple had come loose on the rear brakes, meaning that at the critical moment when Michael applied the brakes all the pressure would have gone from the rear brakes, allowing only the front brakes to slow car down. Looking at the TV pictures, experienced people thought Schumacher "grabbed" a brake, in other words, been too sharp on the brake pedal and locked the wheels up, whilst others thought he had suffered a stuck throttle, driving the rear wheels on while the fronts were locked. But when the car was returned to the Ferrari garage and the rear wheels taken away from the tyres to be stripped, some observers noted that there was no trace of any brake fluid on the rear wheel rims. If the bleed nipple had failed or been insufficiently tightened, there would surely have been quite a cascade of fluid over the inside part of the rim." |

So when Eddie said that "he passed me with his brakes totally locked" (or something like that) he was just stating that MS just went off? (Just going for what the observers saw)

The book also tells how, after being forced to sit behind Michael for a few laps because Michael had gearbox problems at France the race before, and effectively ruin Eddies own chances of another 2 points but not being able to go after Rafe, that he (Eddie) wouldn't give way to Michael until ordered to by the team, Ferrari didn't tell Eddie to move over on the first lap so he held station and effectively "forced" Michael to actually "overtake" him, not merely gain the position.

That looks exactly how it happened ,hey Mr V.
I allways thought it was abit desperate looking for a 'planned' overtake. Imagine if ruhbins did that every race! Wouldn't it spice things up!!!!! |

I've read that book and in one part it's suggested that Ferrari felt that Irvine was partly responsible for the accident.

hmmm...Im not sure Silverstone'99 was a mistake, surely Michael was 'handicapped' in trying to get out of the locked wheels/steering situation.

It's a very good book, I have it in my collection. It came from a time before someone told James Allen he would make a good commentator.
In Suzuka 98, I think Schumi had to drive fast on the parade lap to try and get as much cold air into the car as possible because Ferrari hadn't gotten onto the grid quick enough to put ice in the car. If they had he could have taken the parade lap at a more leisurely pace. |
