ToCA Race Driver is here!

Okay so you don't see many games topics over here but I feel this is worth a mention...after a promnising but deeply flawed visit to the ps2 ToCA Race Driver tomorrow officially launches on xbox and PC in much enhanced form. What that means for us touring car fans is....

the opportunity to drive the 2002 season DTM and Aussie V8s (although oddly only the 2001 BTCC) and on a wide range of circuits all in next-gen glory.....I've bought the game this morning but I'm at school so I have to wait to play it...can't wait.

Anyone else interested in this kind of thingf? I find it much more interesting than a season review video...

This is the only game i've been looking forward to that i'm worried as to how good it is. Every game ported from a console so far has been pretty bad, as it has been designed primarily for the console controllers. Also the style of games are quite differnt. Look at F1-2002 as to the level of car changes available, its quite technical. Having played the demo of Tocarace driver it seems very 'arcadey' steering wasnt particularly precise and the visual car behaviour seemed strange. I think i'll be waiting for public opinion on this...... maybe

Well you can always take it back if its THAT bad.

It is pretty good, even on PS2. though there is no qualifying...The Racer PG set up of the game is odd, but the racing is quite good, and the damage model excellent. I like the game but TOCA2 was codemasters best effort in terms of racing-graphics i dunno. Hey codemaster with the new graphics bring back a retro TOCA about the 90's era and your old physics engine. that would be brilliant

It is brilliant on xbox; the PC version I believe is identical. It makes the ps2 game look silly, it really does....I just hope the DTM is avalible from the start.

The controls in the demo of Pro Race Driver on PC are ****...if you need more information about the severe problems so far with the PC version, view the forum at Codemasters at http://community.codemasters.com/for...s=&forumid=124

Hello everybody, newbie here!
Just go here for a comprehensive look at XBox TRD:

http://forum.granturismo.com/showthr...threadid=77224

Very good opinions about it there..

I've got it PS2 and loved it, I'm even considering buyin' XBox for its TRD version !

Off-topic question: I love BTCC (real) series:
can someone tell me what's this year's Media Day gonna be ?

Cheers from Italy !

I've dedicated hours to the game over the last 24 hours and on xbox at least my impressions are very favourable. Put it this way, I've already virtually finished the main game. There are some little bugs like flickering brake lights and the car slipping into reverse on the line but overall it's the best racer I've played in years beautifully suited to the xbox controller and great to look at. Best moment for me was when I progressed to the second tier and found all the DTM cars were 2002 spec.....brilliant! The AI is better too, I love this game.

But it's still not as great as TOCA2.....

With the amazing graphics now available i think it would be GREAT if Codemasters bought out a new Touring Car game baesd on the BTCC in the mid ninetees. Like 1994 for instanse, we could have,
The older style Silverstone
Brands Hatch Indy
Brands Hatch GP (but make sure you can actually take off while going over Dingle Dell unlike Toca Race Driver!)
Donington park GP,
Thruxton,
The older style Snetterton,
Knockhill,
Oulton Park Fosters
Oulton Park GP

And........
Toyota Corrola:
Will Hoy
Julian Bailey
Tim Sugden

Renault Leguna
Alain Menu
Tim Harvey

Alfa Romeo 155
Gabriellie Tarquini
Giampiero Simoni

BMW 318i
Jo Winkelhoc
Steve Soper
Roberto Ravaglia

Ford Mondeo
Paul Radisich
Andy Rouse

Peugeot 405
Patrick Watts
Eugean O'Brien

Nissan Primear
Kieth O'Dor
Eric Van De Poele
Tiff Needel

Volvo 850 estate
Jan lammers
Rickard Rydell

Vauxhall Cavalaire
John Cleland
Jeff Allam

Mazda Xedos 6
David Leslie

INDEPENDANTS

Matt Neal (Mazda)
James Thompson (Peugeot)
Chris Goodwin (Vauxhall)
James Kaye (Toyota)
Nigeol Smith (Vauxhall)
Hamish Irvine (BMW)
Ian Khan (Toyota)
Geoff Steal (BMW)

And then you racing any of those cars in the pack!!! And there could be two modes, works when your racing for the championship or, Independants Cup when you are racing for the cup.

You would be racing against 30 cars!!!

Wouldn't that be great.....

Phoenix1 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Personally I got the game at 10am on the 28th and played until 5pm (well who needs lunch), only thing that has stopped me is work. It works great on a PC (2GHz) though still jumps if you try to run it at full spec. I like the handling of the cars though the random changing of cars and the random Lexus/Alfa speed is strange. I'm being thick but how do I repair my car in the pits? What do I press for that cause I not figured that out yet. Also can you do 2 player championship like before on TOCA 2 would have liked more BTCC tracks but I'm sure there will be be a way to change them (or I hope so) and the same with the car types, I play Grand Prix 4 and you can race anything from Go-karts to lorries (um monaco!). Well enjoy and I'll be back next week when I done it!

i brought it yesterday and have played it loads. My gripe is that they handling sucks (no where near as good as Nascar 2002/2003). If they could make that more realistic and get rid of the **** story line as well, i would be really happy

Yeah the handling does suck.Even when you have the cheat for the better handling it just doesn't feel the same. Also I have it on playstation 2 does it seem that other cars can stop wheel spinning 20-30m before you do? I think there isn't enough tracks either. Only 7 tracks for Australia and 7 tracks for other countries as well. If you were some one in another country and you knew hardly knew anything about Australia and you went to drive in the V8 series you would think that there is only 7 tracks in Australia. Bathurst isn't done that well either (all the heights is wrong over the top of the mountian, and who has ever seen grass on the inside of the dipper lately?)
Hopefully it can be fixed if a second game comes out. With CDs for the 5 main championships ( V8's,BTCC,DTM,Nascar and the ETC and the handling for the cars have to be better.

For the starts it is possible to match them but you have to learn teh count down sequence as Ryan says in the book you just have to get the revs right, I find if I keep them right up and let them drop as the lights go out then floor it again and turn the wheels a tiny bit of one side of the other it means I get away as fast as the others. Anyway with the level of competion in TOCA it not a prob take them all on first lap its the other cars that I can't get right yet!

I find that using full revs in most cars is the best way. Your car gets off the line quite a bit better that way.

My PC is a handmedown as its about 7yrs old so I haven't bought any games for it yet.

Most of my games on the PS2 are car racing ones and the TOCA game in question isn't too bad but the Ryan story is a pain in the butt. My favourit tracks are Brands Hatch and Bathurst and I constantly practice on them so I can improve my times.

Brands Hatch (Asra coupe) 41.16
Bathurst (LRT Commodore) 1.50.45

the story line is stupid, they should do a patch for the game that disables it.

I don't think the storyline adds anything to the game, they should spend the time and effort getting the AI right - on the full Hockenheim circuit the computer controlled cars are incapable of getting through the chicanes without smashing each other to pieces.

More options in the 'freestyle' section would be good as well - why can't I use cars from the various championships against each other and why can't I use them on all tracks?

It's not perfect, but if you have Toca 2, you can get a lot of the cars you suggested as reskins of existing cars.

Check them out at:

Those Extra TOCA2 skins are excellent kmchow. I've had the PS version for years, but tomorrow I'm off to pick up the PC game purely for those......the BMW320i and MG ZS are phinominally accurate.

Yes, some people really have no life and put a lot of effort into making sure the cars are as accurate as possible.

PS: I am ONE of those people!!!

Toca 2 is still fresh b/c you can race many models from different years and championships! It's kinda weird b/c you never thought you would see them on the screen. It feels surreal to watch them during the replay!!

Check out the Ebay sponsored S40, that one is my own creation. For other cars like the JTCC Civics, NATCC Camry, Mazda Xedos, I provided the pictures/info to recreate them for Toca2. The website owner did the actual "painting" and modeling of the cars!

Then, there's a near official/professional patch that some Japanese fan created. It changes EVERYTHING--names,cars, badging, names to reflec the '95 DTM!!! You wouldn't believe it was NOT official. It was that good!
