I saw the movie, and I must say it's reasonably fun to watch. Ok, some of the actors aren't perfect, ok, some of the stuff is quite unrealistic. But as a motorsport lover I think there's plenty of stuff left to enjoy really.

Bramzel, your comments are very welcome : I have to admit that I was very ashamed of my own opinion, and was afraid that we could have nothing else than negative ones here, due to our demands about race movies...

Your post is just the evidence that we could have pleasure with the movie, even if it's very far from the reality. Thanks for that !

For those who didn't see it yet : just don't expect a Le Mans race...

Can't wait to see real stuff filmed like that, though !

unfortunately, not much. And no more than when shown on theaters ...
the greatest deception of the DVD release is that even in the Making-of, the LM part is sooooooo short

before you ask, yes I bought the DVD and don't regret: as Bramzel, I think it's a good entertainment. As bonus, complete inboard laps with Vaillante/Lola and Leader/Panoz

and another thing to note for all of you: if (!) you want to understand, you'll have to learn french: no complete english version of it (one version is with only non-french actors speaking english)

The DVD I rented here had several options. French spoken/Dutch subtitles, English spoken/Dutch subtitles, both without subtitles. So if you'd order it in Holland you'd get that version I suppose.

I asked Luc Besson last year when I met him if he had any plans to release "michel vaillant" here in the states and he said no. I didn't press any further as he was too busy playing kissy-poo with his girlfriend.

Typical.

I'm sorry to say that my lasting memory of M. Besson's involvement with Le Mans is that it meant I couldn't get onto the roof og the "Welcome Building" that year.......

Ok Michel vaillant isn't a "chef d'oeuvre" but it's a car racing movie.

It's not so LM-orientated than "Le Mans" but at least there's a drama !!!

However, if you buy it, don't do like me, don't buy the Collector Edition, Bonuses are too and unsigneficant to deserve the extra money you'll have to pay for it !

I watched Driven recently and, said to say, it deserves ALL the criticism it receives - What a HOUND of a film...

Days of Thunder by comparison is Oscar material! (Actually, as a FILM, I'd rate DoT above Le Mans. Le Mans captures the atmosphere perfectly and the cars are great, but as a drama, it's a non-starter...)

Grand Prix's my favourite racing film, though. Some wonderful cinematography in that film and a plot (of sorts )

Cheers.

For those who haven't seen it, expect a storyline somewhere like Batman. Yes, it's better than Driven (a lot), but it's not as good as the film LeMans (as for race scenes).

Like berbard b said earlier, the onboard footage is actually the best part of the DVD. It's worth buying, but wait untill sales.

while visiting my French friends who live nearish to Lemans this year, they had been given a book about the making of the film, and while it looked very cartoonish (character is based on a cartoon character I gather) it was very interesting to read of how the cars in the film were run in the actual race, with cameras etc and the drivers of the real cars were proud to have actually finished the race. They (drivers) had raced at Lemans before for real, and one thing one of them mentioned is that he had really wanted to have some short shots of them in the film as "other drivers" just as a compliment to their work-but alas, it was not to be.

very interesting that the ACO cooperated with two cars running in therace, with the risks of them screwing up some real teams race with any sort of messup--like the fluid leak for example this year that screwed the two Audis, you never know when something like that could happen.

As I recall the ACO insisted that the two films cameras were "real" competitors, or as real as possible anyway.

I have to say I was cheering the Panoz, which was beating the Lola for some time.
