New Victorian Circuit for Avalon??

From the In Pit Lane website: www.pitlanepr.com/inpitlane
Quote:
Plans are well advanced for the construction of a new racetrack for Victoria. The complex will be built on approximately 122 ha of land across the road from the Avalon Airport....
Although this has not been made official as yet it will happen, unless of course there's trouble with the neighbours, one Mr Fox who just so happens to own a little track on the other side of town.
BTW this has nothing to do with any alternative Grand Prix venue, it's strictly National, Club and state level.

Not if he's getting his beak wet, too.

Supposedly to fill the void that losing Sandown will create. I just hope they use some imagination.

Apparently the drag circuit is well advanced too, but is destined to be near Little River, rather than Avalon/Lara location that Uncle Cranker mentioned which means it will be within the greater city of Melbourne, not Geelong.

Sad to say it, but it's probably going to work as Sandown's replacement

This would be one (potential) national circuit then - but one where IF the V8's ever ran there would not be able to use helicopter shots for any broadcast!

Why not??

Unless the track is located in direct line with either end of the single runway they should be able to do what they want.

Calder is very close to Melbourne & Essendon airports and Sandown is in line with one of the runways at Moorabbin and both didn't seem to have much trouble with helicopters flying in and out and hovering above them.

Not as close as this is supposedly projected. Calder is far enough away that the flight/glide paths are away from the track and sufficiently high enough (Calder is 5 km from the end of the E-W runway and not in the direct flight path - Sandown is 6.5km away and also not in a direct flight path to any runway).

The initial discussion here places the proposed circuit right NEXT to Avalon which mean Terminal Area restriction will end up covering the track. If the track is within 1 nautical mile of Avalon Airtport then any helicopter use for filming is out.

Could this circuit be a long term replacement for both Calder Park and Sandown?? Hence why they are building a drag strip too.

There are some circuits existing already with lots of elevation changes and awesome corners... Very close to Avalon.

They would just need to convince Mr Ford to open them up and make them raceable

If you go down that line they could also replace the Thunderdome!

Even thou we have no use for it in this country, but with 'Kangaroo Meat' as he's affectionately called over in the US going better than anyone expected him too and Bob looking to bring the Thunderdome back to life, would it at all be feasiable to build something like Pocono, Daytona, Indy or Homestead Speedways with some flat tracks on the inside.

I might not be a sound engineer, but if they where to build all the advertising structures around the outside of the speedway using the same material as some of the sound walls that line some of the freeways in Victoria, they might be able to insure themselves from any potential complaints about noise down the track. Yes the airport is there, but flights out of it don't run every couple of minutes like they do at Melbourne Airport.

They might say they don't want to attract International events to the facility, but at the end of the day, whoever funds the project may stipulate that an event be moved or held there in the future as a condition.

I'm not an engineer either but I know you could stand in the east side car park outside of the Thunderdome and barely hear the cars running around inside it.

From experience the mound surrounding the 'dome pushed the sound upwards and it didn't come back down to earth until it was well away from the track and then only as a background noise.

Well a few safety modifications...... and Mr Ford can make some money out of renting out his circuits...

The one i am thinking off is the circuit that climbs halfway up the You Yangs and back down the bottom of the Hill again... Just put some tyre barriers around it, and we have a race circuit... it would be like a Mini-Bathurst..... BUT.. by all means... build a flat circuit 5kms down the road.

MickAU has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
the story re: Avalon was in Motorsport News ages ago.

As for the Dome - I've heard that there will be a heap of Cup cars on the market because of the Car of Tomorrow being the standard - you'll be able to pick up a car pretty cheaply.
