The French term Gran Turismo... or is it Italian?

Anyway, it translates as Grand Touring and essentially describes a car that carries two in comfort, any others being squeezed in the back, travels quickly.

GTO was coined by Ferrari for the racing version of their 250GT in 1962, the 'O' standing for 'Omologato', pertaining to the fact that this race car was homologated as a production model for the FIA's rules, with a minimum production of 100 units.

It's said that there were fewer than the hundred ready when the FIA men came to count, and that the count was halted for a cuppa while the fifty cars were moved from the first warehouse to a second one... in time for the refreshed FIA men to resume their count...

Gotta love 10-tenths!

Heeltoe6, thank you! Thirty years I've been a racing nut, and no one spelled out what "GTU" stood for. And all this time I've been too embarrassed to ask.

Cheers mate!
