MSA British Sprint Championship
Round 1: Castle Combe In a tense and thrilling run-off Terry Holmes shattered the Outright Course Record en-route to victory in the Lola-Judd. The Chichester Chippy was delighted with the round win, his first since 2004, however his second run was listed as a fail after the gear linkage broke. Second place went to Nick Algar who put in a series of ever-improving runs as he continues his acclimatisation to the ex-Fleetwood/Dawson Gould GR55. Steve Broughton slipped back to third after qualifying in top spot; his OMS, which now sports a supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa engine, was initially a handful but after some suspension tweaks he was sensational. It was only as the temperature dropped and the grip faded away in the early evening sunshine that he slipped down the order. Simon Bainbridge was again in bullish mood with the Audi TT Replica. The four wheel drive monster was spinning wheels out of the chicanes as it tried to get the 600+ BHP down onto the cooling track. Steve Miles, who won last year's Combe run-off in monsoon conditions, came home in eighth - the Van Diemen now sporting carbon-fibre bodywork and phase one of a new aero-package. Results 1 Terry Holmes (3.5 Lola-Judd/Connaught ERH) 117.44secs; 2 Nick Algar (3.5 Gould-NME GR55) 120.08secs; 3 Steve Broughton (1.4s OMS-Suzuki CF08) 121.31secs; 4 Kevin Lealan (2.0 Pilbeam-Vauxhall MP62) 125.09secs; 5 Mark Smith (2.0 Reynard-Vauxhall 903G) 125.34secs; 6 Graham Porrett (3.5 Lola-Judd/Connaught ERH) 126.27secs; 7 Simon Bainbridge (4.2t Audi TT Replica 4wd) 127.23secs;8 Steve Miles (2.0 Van Diemen-Zetec RF96MM09) 129.33secs; 9 Phil Lynch (3.2 Ralt-Judd RT37) 129.76secs; 10 Jonathan Toulmin (1.1 Marengo-Suzuki 2) 136.91secs; 11 Peter Howgate (1.8 Ralt-Rover K RT30) 137.58secs; 12 Glyn Sketchley (1.6 Force-Suzuki PT1600) 138.42secs.
