Waterproof Clothing
After another cold wet weekend I am in the hunt for better waterproofs.
I've currently got the standard offering from AWS, which I guess is quite common. However, these are not capable of keeping you dry through a whole day trackside when it rains non-stop (or have I got a duff set?). On Saturday I wore under my water proofs; proban overalls, a pair of jeans, a tee shirt, a warm shirt and a jumper. At the end of the day everthing was wet and I was shivering cold. I've searched old posts on here but have not found any clear pointers to a solution. I've searched the internet and found many options but most look just like the AWS ones and are unlikely to be an improvement. I'm prepared to pay a fair bit more than the AWS price. What I want is something that will actually keep me dry! |

I was wearing my ski gear and was still cold by the end of the day. I have a light weight sprayway jacket that works well as an under layer just in case it really chucks it down

Hi, I was at a very wet silverstone on Saturday, just had t- shirt, jumper on and old pair of combats. Not damp, wet or even moist. At the end of the day took of hi vis jacket and trousers and off I drove. Reason for this is I work for highways maintenance, so good quality waterproofs all round. If you pm me I can sort out details and set a set up for you. The prices are not much more then other hi vis but the quality is second to none. Hope this helps.

i gave up on standard hi vis gear and went to army surplus gor-tex. always found with hi vis gear that seams leaked after a while. but army or RAF gortex trousers are brilliant.

Try looking for Flexothane gear it can be found with high viz in orange lined or unlined. In Ireland it is usually found in safety clothing suppliers I don't know about the UK. With Flexothane trousers can be pulled on over your boots so no need to put them early.
Examples are shown in the links below http://www.safetydirect.ie/4596/HiVi...t/product.aspx http://www.safetydirect.ie/ProductDe...px?prodid=3705 |

Hi Richard,
I have one of these, and it kept me very dry and warm on saturday. Very well made and not a bad price for what you get! http://www.vizwear.com/detail.php?p=568&c=0.4&subc=69 Dan |

The surrent BMMC subsidised offerings are from FRS Countrywear. There are a number of different ones in the catalogue...
Value: £16.14 B-seen Super Bomber: £19.02 Jubilee: £21.87 Oakwood:: £27.60 http://www.marshals.co.uk/resources/23607883739.pdf Does anyone have any experience with these? Should I perhaps just go for the assumption that the most expensive one is the most waterproof? |

Seams, the hood and cuffs are the biggest issues in my experience - all fail in similar 'small' ways all contributing to you slowly getting wetter and colder through the day! I watch Deadliest Catch on Discovery a lot - I think I'd like some of their gear, but that's assuming their stuff is better! I would assume the 'expensive' sailing gear, Musto type brands are effective, but only because they cost so much! So I too am waiting for some guidance! |

I've just ordered the Oakwood waterproof, plus the subsidised trousers plus a proban jacket/trousers set. Will report back when they get a wet outing.
Although all items are very good value, still totalled around £130! I will of course get £40 back from the BMMC at some point though. |

Waterproofs
I have had a set of BERGHAUS wet legs for a couple of seasons now, And they are totally waterproof , And both legs zip from top to bottom which removes the need to remove your boots to put them on, They are brilliant ! I think they were about £45. My hi Vis jacket i replaced this year from a company called Englebert Strause on line cost £45 as well, And after a weekend of marshalling at Thruxton in very wet and windy conditions my overhalls on sunday evening were bone dry! Happy days

I've worn this jacket and body warmer for years and it still is keeping me very warm and dry, even at Thruxton this weekend. The body warmer is seperate and really cuts out the icy winds.

I watched the coverage from Thruxton at the weekend and have spoken to a couple of people who were at Donington... so I decided that having some spare kit would be a good idea!
I've just been to my local safety shop (Ace Overalls in Loughborough) where for just less than 40 notes inc VAT I now have a new pair of fairly basic overtrousers (7.95) and a longer coat than my bomber jacket (24.95). For the first time ever I have found a long hi-viz orange coat that doesn't drape below my knees! And what will happen now? It'll be dry for the rest of the year... |

As well as a Waterproof outer layer, try to avoid wearing jeans underneath probans. Wet Denim has the thermal properties of a block of ice. I always wear a good pair of walking trousers, solar dry Craghoppers are good and not that expensive. Base or "wicking layer" tops designed for walking are also a good investment.
I always look out for the "end of range" walking gear to keep costs down. |
