If you were starting out?
If you were looking to start hillclimbing in a prodution based tin top and being somewhere even close to competitive, what would you begin with?
What car would you pick? Which class (capacity) would you enter? Would you build n/a or turbo? Let's keep it simple and limit it to some sort of modified production car. Thought this'd be a nice Monday discussion! |

VW Scirocco - Stripped out and caged with one bucket seat and harness. Engine rebuilt and tuned, with twin Weber DCOE 45's, running on Avo springs and dampers with 13 x 10 rims and Avon slicks, widened arches and aero front and rear.
I think they were 1800cc back in the day, so would be upto 2ltr Mod Prod. |

This is the One
Mitsubushi FTO - Stripped out and caged with one bucket seat and harness. Engine remapped and auto shift modded for quicker changes, running RalliArt springs and dampers and full spherical bearing suspension with 8x17 rims and Michelin slicks, widened track and aero front and rear spoilers but not CHAV spec .Just the noise alone would be worth it as 6 cylinder MIVEC howling away is LUVERLY.....

MGF hillclimb/sprint/trackday car
MGF 1.8 K series Non road legal but would not take much to make it road legal again. Been used last season at Gurston acheiving mid 42 sec runs Road tyres. Pretty standard car apart from 9 ltr fuel tank in boot (would need replacing for trackday use) Sytec fuel pump Multi point cage welded in with nascar style door cage Needs seat and harness as they borrowed it for last season from me Standard seat mountings still in the floor Built to blue book mod prod regs Logbook Hardtop Ideal starter car |

Although not a true tin top how about an Alpine Renault GTA or A610, modified motor and Turbo but keeping most of the trim to use as a road car as well.
Something different with amazing traction. |

An old Saab. Something cheap enough that I could afford to write it off, but would be strong enough to protect me when thrown at the scenery.
