Thanks for starting the thread, just saw this news via DSC.
He really helped shape sports car racing, not just by founding Panoz cars but also founding the American LeMans Series. |

He's done wonders for racing, for Road Atlanta and for the NE Georgia Community. Certainly led a long, fruitful life, but he'll be missed.
Race on, Don. |

He saved sports car racing in the US and it could be argued it wouldn't have it's current promenance around the world without him. And this is his 2nd career!

They need to bring all of them back out again for Petit and the Panoz lap(s) during the weekend.

In 40 years of spectating the noise of the Panoz at the Silverstone FIA GT in ‘97 is just the absolute best. Lancaster bomber on steroids; the ground shook like a fart from a T-Rex (I expect..!). First time I used the “f” word with my Dad. RIP

He and his team made a reliable and efficient front engine prototype. Probably the loudest car in the bass register.

One of my favorite things to do at PLM is to stand at pit out. Nowhere in the world can you get so close to the cars at full throttle (a Jersey barrier and a chain link fence is the only separation). To keep from being blown over, you literally had to hold onto something as the Panoz LMP1 blew past.
Another memory from PLM was after the race as the cars were being loaded into haulers, a Panoz crew member thought it would be a good idea to do a brake stand - burnout in the paddock area with the Panoz and I was lucky enough to be in the vicinity. What a legacy that man leaves with his cars. He did some other great things, too. edit: In honor of The Don (picture quality is poor but that sound!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnM5qpHrALc |

I agree he saved top-flight sportscar racing in the US. Shame it’s where it is now, but that’s not a discussion for here. A good, long life, well lived. I was there when St Andrews gave him an honorary degree back in 1999 or 2000.

He leaves quite a legacy. As race fans, we have so much to thank him for.
The LMP-01 Evo was, without doubt, my favourite open prototype of all time. Watching it trackside was an event in itself, every time. Thank you, Don! |

Sound wise, this is the best historical record I can find of the roadster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U86lf-LRXiE This would be the best video if the sound matched the video... use your imagination: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76sa...&index=29&t=0s This whole video is awesome sauce but the few clips of the GTR-1 are the only trackside clips I have found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z2L...&index=72&t=0s |

No sense in asking someone to rethink specific events that brought them into the same sport you were in to, right? It's a tribute thread. Glad to know you were a fan of him! |
