What was your favorite drive by Niki Lauda?

It is a New Year and a new Season has yet to start. Since I am bored I am going to run a series of threads on favorite driver performances. There have been some good discussions lately that I think we all have enjoyed.

The thread will be titled: "What was your favorite drive by (fill in the blank)." I think we can start in the '70's lets say and work our way up to present.

I only ask that we keep it positive and no hijacking!

For the first I thought we would go with one of the dominating drivers of that era: Niki Lauda.

My favorite by Niki was not a drive actually. It was his decision, with the WDC at risk, to not race in the final round in Japan that year after that horrible accident at the 'Ring. The conditions were awful, and I think it took a lot for him to take that action.

On a similar vein. The comeback drive at Monza was quite special too.

On different vein. His last win at Zandvoort was a great battle with Prost.

The first race he led, Canada 1973 in a BRM that had no right to be in first place. This was the drive that tipped him for Ferrari in 1974 and the rest was History. Coincidently, it was the last race a BRM ever led.

His last one in the Jaguar. Sorry JohnSSC, I could'nt resist.

Have to agree with you though, it would have been a tough decision to make in Japan. As I was only a casual fan during Lauder's later years, I can't recall EERO's examples (at that time I was 3 years old).

His sheer consistency in 1977 which won him the world title. Add to that 1984...

His lap of the Nurburgring in qualifying in 1975, the first sub-7 minute? lap. He said after that he had a special sort of feeling that lap and he has never let himself get into that frame of mind again in a race car.

As F1manoz says, his consistency in '77 and '84 were impressive, and amazing considering that the relations with the team and him weren't that great in either year. In 1977 he was still seething about Ferrari's handling of the aftermath of his 1976 accident, when Enzo signed Carlo Reauteman for the rest of the season, and in 1984 it seemed to Niki that Ron would have rathered Alain win the title than Niki. So much so that Niki had all but signed for Renault for 1985, but they pulled out of the deal.

His last drive, in Adelaide in 1985, was a great drive. He started along way back, and had just taken the lead when he went off due to brake problems.

Thanks everyone - some good stuff. I had forgotten that he had the first sub 7 minute lap at Nurburgring. All the more impressive that when you watch Derek Bell take us around in 6:30 or whatever in the 962 Porsche in 1983. I can't imagine doing a sub 7 in an open-wheeler on such a rough course - wouldn't mind trying though!

And Wrex, I was 16 in '73!

Very nice topic, JohnSSC

EERO mentions one of my favorite drives.....I will add a couple others....
One's I saw in the flesh....
Canadian GP in 1976...Niki's 2nd race after the accident....I had snuck into the pits at Mosport Park and was shocked at Niki's injuries.....he finished only 8th that Sunday but what courage.
1975 USGP.....flag to flag win in the 312T
1977 USGP.......clinched his 2nd WDC at the Glen
1984 Canadian GP....finished 2nd to Piquet at Montreal.

One's I wish I sad seen in person....
1977 South African GP.....a very tragic race....yet Niki's win shows that he is back...and gets Enzo's attention in the process....
1984 at the Oesterreichring when he won his home GP.
1985 Zandvoort......holds off Alain Prost for his last F1 win..

and JohnSSC & Wrex....when I saw Niki in the flesh for the first time at Mosport Park for the 1972 Canadian GP....I was 25....you young pups!
