St. Petes Attendance

CART says 90,000 fans showed up over the three days. That's pretty good. I think they had a good show and next year there will again be lot of interest. Watching on TV it appeared that the stands were completely full.

Yeah I mentioned elsewhere that Chris Pook said in the St.Pete's press conference that the secret to one of these things (street races) is to get a good, manageable first year crowd and build it up over the future years. I'd think the crowd of 35000 on race day and 90000 for the weekend is a good solid starting point. That can be grown to 50000+ race day over the next fews years etc. as the event really takes on a annual place in St.Pete's calendar of events and the city's people get behind it.

Crowds were very good all weekend, even Friday! I was pleased to see all the families in the stands(kids under 12 were free). CART is building their future fans just like when I was a kid. The track still has room for more grandstands and the existing ones can be built larger. A+ for effort from CART, they marketed the heck out of the race.

That's a good crowd figure for a new event. Expect it to grow over time if the race is as good as that.

I think 30,000 seems to be a manageable crowd size. Having that many people in the heart of a city as well as having streets shut down can cause serious congestion. That leads to frustration and tarnishes peoples memories of the event. It seems like the folks that put this on had their act together.

Pook said in a St. Pete Times article that 50,000 for the weekend was break-even and that attendance was "in the range." Where someone at cart.com got 90,000 when his CEO essentially says "about 50,000" better check with his boss.

However did I guess that Indycool would say "all figures are false"?

Liz, it's pretty easy to guess I would but it was pretty easy to document this time. You know how I feel about Pook but I actually believe him this time. His estimate makes much more sense with the rest of the media estimates I saw.

Cart can only fill what stands they set up and from what TV and people on the forum who were there have said, there weren't too many empty seats at the event. That front stretch was packed.

All 26,000 grandstand seats were occupied and another 14,000 general admission tickets and paddock passes were sold. The weather turned out perfect, just like the weekend for grand prix general manager Tom Begley.

indycool's number is the same as St. Petersburg officials and CART's.

¡As-de-mim! number comes from Robin Miller and SpeedVision.

The CART and St. Petersburg city officials is the real gate. The Robin MIller and Speed numbers are uninformed guestimates.

Wrong again sqw2 on multiple counts. Dover, being the race organizer, is the official word.

So CART.com is wrong? Hum. I think you are accepting a more optiomistic number than Chris Pook.

So how about the TV numbers then?

So if Cart.com is right then the figures from Miami, Cleveland and other venues last
year were correct. Totally agree guys.

TV ratings as predicted are a bit disappointing, just highlights what everyone on the forum has been saying, Cart needs to upgrade their TV as a priority.
