BAR quick in Imola
http://www.barf1fans.com/2003/february/24.html
The Melbourne motor will be used tomorrow. On the bad side of things the team still has reliability issues. |

2.5 seconds slower than Schumacher ? It may be quick be Villenueve's standards but its not that quick.

Quoth Villeneuve: "The car is fast, but if it can't make it to the first pit-stop then it's no good, is it?"
Yes Jacques, that's the sort of talk that doesn't get you dropped for 2004 |

As Dr. Einstein said "No, Johnny, not the Melbourne motor, please, not the Melbourne motor, use the quick one Johnny"
Slight paraphrase from the movie-- |

As opposed to what Cos? "The car is obviously quick and RELIABLE despite the fact that I've only managed to complete less than 50 laps in FOUR straight days of testing" I love how so many fans like you prefer it when drivers bull**** them. Isn't JV stating the obvious?

Maybe tomorrow JV will be able to get in some long runs. The race motor should still be yet morw powerful and more driveable.
Hopefully, BAR will shut up some of its critics this year. I know the potential is there. |

I'd say things are looking bad for BAR unless the new Honda is a corker. That seems unlikely but we'll have to see what happens tomorrow I guess.

I dont think they were even trying to set fast times. They were working on getting the new motor set up. I am not at all worried. As long as the team moves foreward that is all that matters. So far they have been faster than last year in every track they have run on. Ferrari may be out of reach but as far as Renault and maybe even Williams I think they should be looking over their shoulders by mid season wondering where the hell did the ghost white car come from??

well, its easier to make a fast car reliable than to make a reliable car fast.
Before, most of the BAR's were slow and unreliable, so this car will be an improvement. |

Surprise, surprise Honda's Melbourne spec engine is HEAVIER that the latest development engine BAR's been using in pre-season testing. The difference is so marginal that Jacques can't tell if there is a performance advantage with the new engine. Oh yeah Jacques was only able to do 17 laps today. Things do not bode well for Melbourne at least. Has anybody else lost all confidence in Honda?

Plus which, whilst there has been a mighty debate as to the lack of sponsorship on this year's Jordan, has anyone noticed how little there is on the BAR?? I'd argue even less. Sure, there's a works backing and I'm fairly certain that BAR are in a reasonable state of finaces, but still...

Well BAR lost Sonax (poached by McLaren) and Intercond but apparently they've gained Honda as a principal sponser as opposed to merely a technical partner. I'm not sure how much money changed hands but it's clear some did.

Well now I am not looking forward to the start of the season! Things are not looking good at all. This is like a replay of last year. Somehow Honda has again not been able to keep pace with F1, or at least so it seems.
Now all I look forward to is how well they will develop thorought the season. Hopefully much faster than last year. |

it's so sad that they waited until the last week of testing to burst our bubble. There was so much cause for optomism this year now it just looks like same old, same old. BTW Autosport is reporting that the new engine is not only heavy but is vibrating so much as to cause mechanical failures. Talk about deja vu, can anyone say BAR-Supertec 001. I think I'm going to puke.

Ok, I am back!!
Who was that pessimist? I don't think things are that bad yet. The car is fast. The issues they have been having are not engine blow ups and as of late not transmission failures either. The engine is not as smooth as the previous one but its still fairly new so who knows what improvements will be made. As for the weight, lets see how it really affects times. JV said its quick! Thats a start. Its still a little disappointing but there is still hope. Its only hopeless when its too late. |

damn the eternal optimist in you Neilap. I agree the only positive is that the chassis seems quick, if fragile, but Honda continually disappoints .........

Gee!! I hope the Honda doesn't keep going bang. I'll be living only 12 minutes walk from Albert Park next year, and I don't want Honda bits and pieces landing on my roof

I also hope that Honda get their problems worked out, since one of the things I was most looking forward to this year is Jacques mixing it up with the big boys and silencing his ill-advised detractors.

And can you please get it right? If Jacques is not at BAR next year he won't have been dropped, sacked or kicked out - his contract will have ended and both parties will have decided not to renew it. |
