We all rememver Sennas incredible drive at that race.
I remember seing a hedgehog cartoon logo on the side of the car by the cockpit. Does anyone know why it was there? |

Sponsorship, maybe?
Because in 1993, Williams were sponsored by Sega and had Sonic the hedgehog on their car. And in 1998/99, they were sponsored by...can't remember, but it was whoever makes Woody Woodpecker. And the woodpecker was on the car. So it was probably some form of sponsorship. |

Close, but of course Senna was driving for McLaren that year.
For a while, before Sega grizzled that their logo was being misrepresented, McLaren were commemorating every win against the Sonic-sponsored Williams-Renault by painting a SQUASHED hedgehog on the side of the car.... |

I didn't actually mean that Senna was a Williams driver - I was just using those as examples to show that teams (or a team, anyway) have used cartoon characters, &c., for sponsorship.
A squashed hedgehog? Sounds like a quality mickey-take to me... |

The Sonic thing was on the Williams' of Hill & Prost. The hedgehog was cleverly done so that it appeared as though part of the cockpit was missing and the lower half of the driver was actually Sonic and was in a reclined driving position with a hand on a gear lever.

Precisely. McLaren was painting a squashed hedgehog to celebrate their wins over the almost unbeatable Williams.
That was one unforgetable race, altough I never been a Senna's fan. He was racing in a race-by-race basis contract, with Ron Dennis trying to please Senna in every way. Short after, he would say that he would drive for Williams "for free", just to have a better car... How could he possibly know that his fate was in the blue car ? |

The reason the squashed hedgehogs adorned the side of Senna's car was for a dig at Sega.
Sega had a deal with Senna for a F1 racing game on the Megadrive for 1992 and Senna was disapointed that it was Williams (and more importantly Alain Prost) who received sponsorship for the following season. |

Anybody recall the drive put in by Barrichello in the Jordan? It all came to naught due to engine failure. About the last time I thought he was worth considering as a future champion.

Sega sponsored the Donington GP as well. The girls on the grid were all dressed as weird hedgehogs
