BTW, it was only scheduled to be a 500km race, but from memory ended up less than that fininshing with a red flag due to bad weather.

just checked, yep, 50 laps of 81 completed by the winner Paul Morris.

RaceTime should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
And try www.racetime.com.au/?event=z9949 for lap chart/times/results etc

Summary Of Safety Car Periods
# From Lap To Lap Total Time
1 2 5 4 12:00
2 25 30 6 22:00
3 32 49 18 1:15:12
Total Yellow Laps 28 1:49:12

Result page has stats from race - ended up a 50 lapp race with 28 of the 50 behind the safety car.

I think that was the year after the really good super tourers Bathursts. Man they were good. I think 1997 was the best though.

1998 I think will always hold a special place in my mind as "the best", just because those two cars were that close all day

The 97 -98 super tourer events at bathurst were great races. Maybe the best ever ... But there have been some classics

1999 Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 500.

This meeting ended up being a real shame. The support categories were brilliant, it's not often you get to see Formula Vee or Improved Production Cars at the Mountain, but boy did they turn on a show and a half. Commodore Cup too was good fun, that was a category that always looked good on the big hill.

The decision to split the Future Tourers and AUSCARs from the Super Tourer was forced on organisers by action outisde of the category. It's a shame as between that and the weather a fascinating race might have ensued.

But because of the jealousy or paranoia of others it never happened that way, and the weather reduced everything into a farce not of their making.

Why do people see two Bathurst as being a bad thing? Surely going to the Mountain twice in the same year is a bonus, not an excuse to indugle in some theraputic reputation bashing.

But, to quote Roger Horton, that's just me.

Agree completely. It's amazing that alot of the fans were split down the middle during the 1997/1998 'war', yet so supportive of a second Bathurst enduro nowadays.
