Ultimate Hillclimb car?
i was thinking of a spec for a hillclimb car and i came up with this:-
2.5 V6 Air cooled (i thought if ur running for like 40 seconds at a time is it worth havin a water cooled system? if it can be done of course) carbon tub (probably F3) all the rest same as any other unlmited runner what ya fink? |

I see what you mean about the air cooled engine because surely the engine wouldnt heat up enough and it would obviously save weight.

You would have to take into consideration air ambient temp length of time on start line etc quickest thing these days seems to be the bike engine route must be lighter than a 2.5 V6 ?

if you could fit it, maybe one of the subaru flat fours?
would really lower the cg, plus those engines make good torque and can make big numbers if modded right. problem is that attaching the thing to the chassis would be about as much fun as a root canal |

well if you're going to use a 6 cylinder aircooled engine
umm...porsche comes to ind- they even had aircooled turbos+a single seater chassis= best hillclimb car ever (imagine pushing 1/4 the mass the engine is supposed to!) |

I know of a couple of mid engined Porsche 356 based specials built with the subaru boxer turbo and transaxle. If you used the same combo but with a formula ford or formula three tub it would have to be a bit of a weapon - say conservatively 400bhp and 400kgs.

hmmm
i reckon, gotta be a f3 chassis, with completely redesigned suspension and seating position (higher). bigger wings, bigger tyres. an an older modern f1 engine, like the old renault which was sold to mechcronme? (1997?) that would do nicely i think. bike engines are quick, but car engines are better i think! graham white jnr has the best car by far at the mo! |

If you are talking ultimate - why not buy a 2002 F1 tub?

Not sure about air cooled engine - most hillclimb cars run comparatively little cooling anyway. We've also had F1 cars running - a 94ish(?) Jordan one of the most recent but they are simply not nimble enough - I doubt you could get a 2002 car around Pardon or Karousel! F3 based chassis seem to have the right balance of chuckability, and of course the current crop of Goulds and Pilbeams are pretty amazing.

You'll crack the heads without any form of cooling on start up, particularly if you run full load.
For the few kgs you'll save its not worth it... if you want to ditch the water go for a proper air colled engine! Alex |

Re: the cooling. Do what the smaller tractor pull guys do over here. Some run methanol (which runs cool and you don't need a rad) but then they fill the block with ethylene glycol (the green cooling ****) and cap the bugger off. You way still want a water pump to ensure you don't get localise heating, but it would only need to be small. For that matter just run a small motorbike radiator, it would cope with the heat load on such a short run.
The other thing the tractor guys do is run a total loss cooling system, just make sure you're the first one up the hill |

Whats a total loss heating system?
Surely a ground effect car would be best? Low drag, good downforce. |

fan car?
maybe go for something with less uptop power and more low end grunt, to get off the line and out of corners |

What about one of the BMW flat-twin motorcycle engines? They're in a flat configuration so log CofG, small, light and aircooled. They go up to a 1150-1200cc putting out 85bhp (@6750rpm) in standard (touring) trim. They've got to be good for a lot more than that given some attention.

could you try to adapt an F1 chassis to run either passive or active rear steering to help get around the nimbleness problem?

With regard to hit and miss cooling suggestions it`s worth noting that most if not all the V6 cars and some of the V8`s have hot water pumped round them to get them to the correct temp BEFORE they are fired up. On the subject of V6 it has been seen that they do lack some of the low down grunt of the V8`s and so have trouble getting out of slow corners hence they have to be flung around a bit to keep everything on the boil....and finally I`d love to see/hear a V10 on the hills!!!

Why not go back to the thread you had going about 3 wheelers. A hybusa motor as standard will give you around 220hp. Driving the two front wheels with the back like a tail skid should give a great car. Depending on the diff ratios you will have enough grunt to light the wheels over most of the course. |

We already have something like that running the hills now......
Not quite sure what engine it runs but it is of the configuration mentioned above..........2wheels fore and 1 aft...... Home built...obviously.....with a ring on the steering wheel to change gear with.....same as the 206WRC..... And as a final word on the vehcle................. Bloody Scarey.............. Riders are affectionately known as "The Crazy Gang"......... Go Figure !!!!!!!!!!!!! |

maybe use the three wheeler concept with dual engines? one powering each wheel...run two cvt's which read off of steering and yaw angles to automatically correct and effictively act as differentials hehe
