Technically Indy isn't a new circuit - the Indy 500s in the 1950s counted for the World Championship. I know the current layout is totally different, but so is the current Hockenheim.

I think the Alan Jones win was Spain in 1980, which ultiamtely lost its world championship status. Thankfully Jones was champion without it.

Patrese did 256 races - that's one record Mcihael probably won't get.

Schumacher's won the Australian Grand Prix 4 times.

The first 'Grand Prix' could be defined as France 1906, some 44 yers before the first World Championship race (Silverstone 1950 as stated).

Hate to dispell a myth but i've heared it from the horses mouth that Senna didn't hit Irvine. The story goes that Irvine retook Senna after being lapped, then later on in the McLaren garage after a few peach schnaps, Gerhard Berger the wind up merchant that he is said to Senna "Your not gonna let him get away with that are you?!" Senna promptly marched to the Jordan garage where he took a swing at Irvine who moved out of the way and fell off a table.

Right you are KB, I didn't think of that to be honest - I was going to prepare a rant at Ensign for not appreciating that Americans viewed overseas-born people who work hard to rise up from nothing to become national rheroes as their own.....

Actually, nothing to do with Andretti or Ferrari...Ferrari is based in Italy and essentially Italian but it is difficult to call them Italian when they have always had Johnny Foreigners in their team.

It's more that Alberto Ascari was NEVER Formula 1 World Champion.

The last - and ONLY - Italian Formula 1 World Champion was Nino Farina.

Yep. Ascari was not a Formula 1 World Champ and the question specifically states "Formula 1", not merely "World Champ".

There is no reason at all why the World Champion Driver should be the guy who wins the F1 title, other than the FIA regulations that implement this. Given the paucity of F1 cars in 1952-3 the AIACR (or whatever it was then) decided that the World Champion Driver would be decided by performances in Formula 2 races and the Grands Prix shifted their formulae accordingly to be qualifying rounds. The AIACR could have picked sportscars or something.
