Paul Dana International Raceway
Since this is the first circuit that I have designed since Paul Dana tragically died I have decided to name it in his honour.
This oval is truly unique it it's layout with it's 3 fast corners at the beginning of the lap, the kink in the back straight & the slower final turn. It is a 1.5 mile high bamked oval with the front straight banked at 5 degrees, T1 at 12 degrees, T2 at 15 degrees, T3 at 18 degrees, the back straight at 4 degrees, the kink at 7 degrees & the final corner at variable banking from 18-25 degrees to allow easier overtaking. The road course includes all of the oval's corners, combining banked & flat corners. The road course has 17 corners & can also be run as a separate circuit. Hope you like it! |

Very nice A_F, and a fitting tribute.
Good work, I think everything about it works nicely - and added to that I feel the infield course has a certain finesse to it, than many oval infield's don't have in modern circuit design. The most prominant of those would be Indy. Yeah, very cool - and good work. (Again ) |

Thanks Martin! I did feel that the best tribute that I could give was a truly unique oval circuit designed for a series that Paul obviously loved. And if you have a good oval track then surely a good infield track should come as part of the package. This is the main problem that I have with Indy-great oval but what about the road course?

It's useless no doubt, but they are very restricted on space and speed restrictions and all sorts. I just despise the twisty bit after the backstraight.

Very nice, A_F - the oval looks a real challenge, and the road course looks great as well. I'd love to see F1 there. A great tribute

If motorcycles were to race there, you would have to make a shortcut that misses out the banking. Great Track!

Oh wait, they could just use the Infield layout.

Thanks for the praise everybody! I was quite pleased with this one myself, especially the first 3 oval corners & the infield.

Don't forget the AMA run bikes around some of the banking at Daytona, so it is possible for some of it to be used

I think BSB used to use part of the Rockingham oval as well did they not?

Yeah, that's really a great track. On the non-separate road course, there should be seen some exciting overtaking at its entrance (turn 4 after the 3 banked corners). I like the slow section after the winding infield straight, too, because that forces engineers to find a compromise with the car set-up.
But how long must an oval be to fit into it such an interesting infield? And the big question: Is it possible to go flat-out through the final corner of the oval? I must admit that I don't think so. By the way, this is my 1st posting on this board. I've occasionally designed some tracks since my teens in the early 90s, on paper. I plan to redraw (if necessary), scan and post some of those in a separate thread at some point in the unforseeable future. I'm really happy that I've found this board here. Bye Yannick (well, I'm not into Larrousse or AGS, I just liked the name ;-) |

Yeah. It's really dangerous for oval tracks to have cars coming straight out of the pits onto the track. The speed difference would create some horrific accidents if the was contact between a car at racing speed & a car exiting the pits. The long pit is effectively a 'speeding up' lane.
I didn't plan on the final corner being flat out. I wanted some lifting at least to aid overtaking which would also be helped by the variable banking. I can't see it being a corner for which braking is required, just quite a lot of lifting. I would also think that the length of the oval would be around 1.75 miles. |
