Marshalling at a foreign GP, advice please.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on how to volunteer to marshal (flag preferred duty) at a foreign GP (European) next year. I know that it is not easy and that most circuits usually have more than enough of their own marshals to do their own GP but if you don't buy a raffle ticket......... Thank you in advance. Look forward to any replies.

By the way I enjoyed the banter about the Wembly Race of Champions and the 'criteria to be applied'. Maybe there should be a Miss World, oh OK Mr/Mrs Marshal beauty contest as a pre requisite.

Contact the MSA for approval (They will send you paperwork approving you)!

Get an invite from GP organiser of your preferred Country

Have fun!

PS - I think you need to be a graded MSA registered Marshal to get their approval

If you go the Volunteers In Motorsport site you can complete a request for an overseas marshalling approval letter (plus the Le Mans application tick). Done mine earlier in the week and got the letter from ADL a few days later.

After that, it's get in touch with the organisers of where you want to go. I'm sure someone on here will have more helpful details for you

Personal favourite - Montrael.

Agree with FC, those of us that have been to Montreal rate it very highly. It's simpler in many ways than a European GP, since a lot of the locals speak English. Get a cheap flight, stay in the university halls of residence. Not too expensive.

For a real adventure, try back to back weekends in Montreal and Le Mans.
Mr WW and I did it once, one hell of a marshalling "holiday".

The best bit of advice I could give - is go somewhere where you know the language, even if it's only biere si vous plais.

A good start is work out what GP you want to do and post a thread. There's bound to be a 10/10ther whos been to that GP or knows someone who has. You could always search the relevant circuits website to find out if they have a link to their marshals club.

Dear All

Many thanks for those who have replied. It is very helpful. I still have in mind the Canadian GP as I was all booked up for this a couple of years back but then unfortunately (due to reasons out of my control) had to give it up. Good points about the lingo too. Whilst Spain is easy to get to can't say my Spanish is up to much other than cerveza por favor. Sill may consider Valencia race.

I know its just slightly out of europe but Australia was a GP i really enjoyed, plenty of alcohol after duty and you really feel appreciated. Benefits include discount at Oz GP merchandise stalls, overalls, bar-be-que on Sunday evening, free beer after every day, overalls, cap and all sorts of other stuff.
