I don't recall an F1 safety car being dropped under race conditions. I do recall a number of pace/safety car spins at UK club level though, and very funny they are too

Alex Riberio stuffed the nose of the Mercedes medical car into the Tabac barriers at Monaco in 2000, I recall it was before either of the FP sessions or Qually.

Not quite the same but there's the infamous example of the medical car running over Taki Inoue.

Infact, Inoue must be one of the most unlucky in this respect as there was also the incident where Jean Ragnotti driving the R5 Turbo course car ran into the back of Inoue's Footwork which was being towed back to the Monaco pits during practice.

So the conclusion is that, no it had never spun.

I don't recall a safety car ever spinning, although I do remember Heidfeld literally driving the door off one.

Here's 'Quick Nick' trying his best to spin a safety car.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWq8zH5GjA0 Nice try, Nick. Also liked this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tda2QLtYOTI Nearly. Last edited by Marbot; 17 Dec 2012 at 14:31. |

A number of years ago F1 used one of those fancy Acura NSXs at Montreal as safety/pace, just when they were first introduced to the North American market. When practice was due to start race control sent the pace car out for a couple of laps to check track. The driver stuffed it into the big gravel trap driver's left between the pit lane entry and what later was called Champion's Wall. Like doorframe-deep. Almost made it to the tires at the very back.
What made it even funnier was that they then sent a wrecker to haul it out, but it didn't have quite enough rope. So the wrecker driver gingerly backed the truck up to connect... and got it stuck too. Took them awhile to find a wrecker that could pull the truck AND the car out. So much for practice. And my stomach hurt from laughing by the end of it. Another one is not from F1 but from a CART street course -- second Toronto Molson Indy, so 1987? I was yellow flag in the short chute between turns 5 and 6. CART SOP was for start third or fourth time by. First lap was essentially the parade lap, then two or three pace laps, each one getting faster. On the last pace lap the driver of the pace car (Pancho Carter) spun just past our station, putting the car crosswise centre track in probably the narrowest spot. Fastest yellow I ever threw. Bobby Rahal (pole) went left, the other car went right, and the whole field neatly split and squeezed around the pace car at speed. The start was an anticlimax after that. keke |

I remember a pace car being stuck in the wall on one of the American street races - forget which one - in late 80s at the start of a sportscar (IMSA?) race. Drivers decided that counted as pulling off and promptly started racing.

A few years ago IMSA waved the green while a safety truck was still in turn one at Lime Rock.
Although completely OT, another safety truck and year in review moment - Montoya vs. Jet Dryer... WHOOSH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB3IcGqe50k |
