Phoenix Park 2007.
Just three weeks to go now to the highpoint of the Irish Racing Season, The Phoenix Park Motor races in the centre of Dublin. If last year is anything to go by, it should be a great weekend!
So what classes are out and have we any UK visitors again this year???? |

Can't wait for it. I'm dragging the 128 out. Had a good run in Mondello last weekend so hopefully it should go well. Should be a full Historic grid as usual. I've also heard romours of various exotic sports racing cars coming over. Anyone know anything? Any other 10 tenthers racing?

Any update on John Watson being reunited with his Brabhams ? Is it possible he'll do some lappery of the Park ? Was the last time Wattie drove in the Park when he showed up with the Eiffeland March ?

Jeez, and I thought I was the anorak round here!!!
I'm sure we'll get an historic update shortly! I know the Fiat Uno/Punto race has a healthy entry, the Supercars are back in the 'Park and the Historic grid is almost full!! Think Formula Sheane and Global GT Lights share a grid, which should be interesting! |

Negotiations are underway to get Watsons Brabhams - BT16 & BT30 here. The BT16 won at the Park 40 years ago. Both it & the BT30 have great racing history in Ireland. The owner, a Dubliner based in UK, races them quite a bit & is very close to a decision to bring them across. Possible demo runs & one may run in the Formula Libre races. Stay tuned to here & the Park website.
LOTS MORE EXCITING STUFF IN THE PIPELINE. |

It would be great to get Professor Monson to bring his cars over. He's got some incredible kit that's for sure. Hopefully I'll be able to see some of them out in the Silverstone Classic this weekend. |

We're showing our age now!! I remember being brought to Dalgetty's by my dad for my first rally jacket; couldn't wait for the next Mondello meeting to show it off!! I think I had to have it surgically removed a few years later!!
Just got this re the Park: The Leastone Racing team in association with Fina Oils and sponsored by Topcon have done it again this year. Following on from last year's success where they brought the Renault Formula 1 car of World Champion Fernando Alonso to the Phoenix Park Races, this year they have secured the worlds most expensive and fastest sports car the Bugatti Veyron not only for a paddock display but for an on track demonstration too. The car will grace the Phoenix Park Races on the Sunday only. The Bugatti Veyron will be on display for the day on the Fina/ Topcon stand and will do a demo run during the afternoon. Bugatti have built just 300 of these machines which produce a staggering1001Bhp and have a top speed of 253mph. The Veyron was named after the winner of the 1939 24 Hr Le Mans race Pierre Veyron and is powered by an 8-litre, 16-cylinder engine that has four-turbochargers. There is a 7-speed semi-manual transmission, which is operated by paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel, and the car has a twin clutch. It will go from 0 – 122Mph in a fraction over 7 seconds, and will get to 250Mph in under a minute. The car appeared as a prototype at the Geneva Motor show in 2002 and was then built by Volkswagen and released for sale in 2006 The car will reach nowhere its top speed in the Park but the noise of the engine will be deafening between the trees. The public will be able to view the car while it is displayed in the paddock during the morning and early afternoon, with the demo taking place mid afternoon. This is a race chance for the Irish public to see one of the world's greatest cars and it is possible with the generosity of it's Irish owner to allow it to be displayed. Stats Model Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Engine type 7993cc, 16 cylinders, W' configuration Power/Torque 1001bhp @ 6000rpm / 922 lb ft @ 2200rpm Transmission Seven-speed DSG, manual and automatic Performance 0-62mph: 2.5sec / Top speed: 253mph |

I may be going as a spectator getting a lift out but I will probably be flying back. How far is Dublin airport from Pheonix Park and is there any camping allowed at the circuit?

Airport is only about 30 mins away, allowing for a bit of traffic. I'm sure pitching a tent somewhere in the paddock area would be ok but I stand to be corrected on that. Anyway, just buy someone a pint and I'm sure they'll find you a truck to stay in the back of!!

All is not lost on The abarths just yet, the Park committee are working on an Open Fiat Race which will include them, be great if that goes ahead.
I woinder if any of the UK Fiats would be interested, their cars are pretty quick in a straight line and should go well in the Park?? And if the racing is good enough, the spoons might make an appearance in the bar on Saturday night!!! |

Phoenix Park Races
Slot Car Racing attraction:
In the race paddock all weekend, including late Saturday night. We have hired from the UK a giant 8 lane slotcar racing rig. Pay & play, race against your friends, prizes for fastest laps etc. We are thinking about organising it as the Motormouth Challenge - I will certainly want to race against him. This will be a big crowd puller for the spectators & visitors - perhaps the racers will have a real go also. |

Not a bad timetable. But why have racing at 10am on sunday when there will be just the deer there? Would it not be better for sponsors and spectators to have the racing later and demo's earleir? Still, can't wait to get out there again.

Phoenix Park
Watson Brabhams
UK based Dubliner Ian Gray is bringing over 2 ex John Watson Brabhams. BT16 won at the Park 40 years ago & was successfully campaigned by Watson here for several years, including wins at Mondello. BT30 also raced here & was used to launch his International career. Both cars will feature in demo runs & the BT16 is entered in the Open Wheel Libre races. Also in attendance will be the Crossle 19F of Prof. John Monson, another Dubliner based in UK. Built in 1970 for Luke Duffy's Team & raced by Ken Fildes to many successes. Later restored by Arnie Black, the car raced in Historic F2 throughout UK & Europe prior to ending up with Monson. Ken Fildes will be reunited with the car this weekend & will drive it in a couple of demo runs. We have also secured a couple a important Crossle single seaters from the same era: 17F - a one-off works F3 car, fitted with MAE screamer engine. Raced by John Watson & Brian Nelson. Owner Paul McMorran will race this car & participate in demo runs. 18F - 1970 F2 car, raced by Brian Nelson in Ireland, UK, & European F2 Championship. Owner TD Reid will race & demo this car. All shaping up nicely!! Should be a great weekend!! I just put in an entry for Gearboxman from this forum in my Fiat 127 in the open Fiat race; he's going to try and take on the Unos in the 1300 class!! Lots of Supercars entered too, they're always great in The Park!!!
Hope the weather holds!! |
