Cross season champions

In Motorsport this month it is mentioned that between July 1970 and June 1971 Jacky Ickx scored more points than anyone else. So if the championship was run over this year period he'd be champion.

Are there any others. I am talking from work here, so have little resources, however I think I have one. Damon Hill from May '94 to April '95 may work.

Can you think of any other candidates? Obviously we should ignore people who won the championship in either of the years for real.

(just for fun!)

Does Moss have any chances?
Prosty in 83/84?

Hmmm, time for the reference books...

In May '94 to April '95 Schumacher scored 112 points
In the same period, Hill scored 115 points

That included Schumacher's dq's asnon points finsihes, and includes all the grand prix from the San Marino GP 1994, to the San Marino GP 1995. It includes the results from both those races.

Take the last 4 races of 1995 and the first 12 of 1986. Then:
1) Mansell - 79
2) Prost - 64
3) Senna - 63
4) Piquet - 49
5) Rosberg - 41

Pretty clear win for Mansell then in 1985/6.

(2) 1982/3

Take the last 2 races of 1982 and all but the last 2 races of 1983 (15 in total) to give

1) Arnoux - 58
2) Prost - 54
3) Piquet - 46
Tambay - 46
5) Watson - 31
6) Rosberg - 27

= René Arnoux 1982/3 F1 World Champion

Did he ever look like a potential champion at the time?

I suspect that's just a typo!

1957-58 might be a good one. I can't see Hawthorn or Fangio scoring best in that period, so maybe it would be Moss.

There is also Carlos Reutemann in 1980-81 : from Belgium 80 to Belgium 81, he scored 81 points (15 times successively !). The second during this time was Jones with 76 points, then Piquet 58. Great domination for Williams !

I once saw a suggestion that the world championship should work this way. On any given day the champion is the highest scorer over the last 365 days.
