I really can't see myself being interested in a race without noise. If the racing is decent, and they avoid the FE-esque dreadful street tracks, 'fan-boosts' and manufacturers congratulating themselves on how great they are, I might give it a chance.

A world electric championship is a bit of a joke though, unless someone invents electric planes.

ETCR looks good. If we can get 30 minute races out of them then that's all that's needed for touring cars. Still would miss noise and gears mind you. It'll be sad when we don't have noise anymore.

FIA WRX proposed an electric class, but Peugeot has left.


I have doubts over the feasabilty of the proposal.


Anyway, Formula E has been much more successful than I predicted.


So let the new challenge begin!

A short demo race could actually help us to judge

For me, given that the cars will be rwd and will have a lot power, it could be an interesting combination. And the big difference with FE is that they will race on real race tracks

Has there been any hint on how much a car like this would cost? I also wonder how easy it would be for small, private teams to operate.

I read on an italian site that it will cost 250.000€, the double of an actual Cupra TCR.

Initially I think it will be out of range of the private teams.

For me the nosense is that a car like the Cupra has no link to an electric road car. The philosophy is there but it won't match any road going car. It would be just impossible to buy a car like this for normal people. Okay that is a racing car but its commerciale counterpart, ipotetically how much would it cost?

With this cost per car what sort of series can exist? Perhaps something with works teams but like TCR no way

It uses a spec powertrain:

The format is effectively the reverse of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, in which manufacturers develop their own powertrains to fit in a spec chassis.

He explained that the plan is to open up some of the restrictions to manufacturers at a later date, allowing brands to produce their own powertrain parts.

“The idea, is after three years, to start to open some of the parts of the kits to the manufacturers for their own development,” he said.

The powertrain used in the Cupra e-Racer was a joint project between WSC and SEAT subsidiary Cupra, with the Spanish brand having been part of the ETCR platform since its launch.

Croatian electric hypercar manufactuer Rimac is also involved in the development, having formed a technical partnership with Cupra.

The car has two twin-electric motors on the rear axle, producing 500 kW (680 bhp).

It weighs 400 kg more than the standard Cupra TCR but is more powerful and accelerates 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds.

Manufacturers Could Convert Existing TCR Cars for ETCR

Slaviero Campos says he expects manufacturers to generally use different cars for ETCR than their TCR programs, in order to fit in with each brand’s road car EV marketing strategy.

However, modifications could be made in order to convert a gasoline-powered TCR car to ETCR specifications.

“They could use the same base,” he said. “There are some modifications that they need to do, not only on the combustion side but the chassis as well.

“The battery is on the floor so you have to have a lot of support on the floor, different support to you have in a regular car, to sustain the battery.

Cheaper than a GT3 car... So not too bad for cutting edge tech.

It would be great to see in Australia. I thought the video of "Formula E new car testing sounds" was comical (sounds like a dentist's office) but cutting edge electric racing may be just the ticket to get young people interested in motorsport, literally motor sport too! None of that engine nonsense.

Hmm, I wonder if they need to use a diesel generator out the back of the pit garages to charge the things, owing to lack of three-phase power outlets in pit garages... That would be amusing. lol

I believe Formula E generators use some form of bio/green oil which is therefore a renewable

By using a spec powertrain it's maybe technically less interesting for manufacturers but a cheap way to get involved in "green" racing.
