Best / Worst Pay Driver

Best has to be DeCesaris, i know Marlboro spent a lot of money on him but he could very easily have won a couple of GP`s, worst off the top of my head, Deletraz was shocking, not sure if Fabre paid for the honour of trundling around in the AGS all those years ago but he was bad as well, looking forward to your suggestions.

As for the best, you've got your Schumachers - Webber drove for free at Minardi, does that kind of count?

Best has to be either M Schumacher or Lauda.
Worst - Deletraz or Lavaggi though if I remember correctly Lavaggi had to build up his own engineering business in order to raise funds for his drives as opposed to the usual pay-as-you-go drivers with wealthy families etc.

Most amusing - Taki Inoue. Totally hapless with practise at Monaco and raceday at Hungary coming to mind!

that was 92 , in 91 Vanderpoele was at the Modena Lamborghini team.

Ricardo Rosset was by no means the worst pay driver, he was at least competent.

Deletraz was a joke.

10 laps down in Adelaide.

He was so slow through the uphill chicane at Estoril he stalled on the racing line!

Worst - Amati.

I cannot believe people would consider de Cesaris (a danger to himself and others, broke Mansell's back in F3) or Diniz (who never won a race at any level in his entire career) as decent pay drivers.

Diniz was respectable - he outqualified Hill and Panis a few times and didn't make many mistakes.

I would consider DeCesaris decent, he was always quick when compared to any of his team mates, was a very good test driver, and you don`t stay around from 1980-1994 if you are a complete ******, i don`t care how much money you bring with you.

I think Lauda paid towards his 74 Ferrari drive - surely last (or only) only case of a race-winning season being self-funded? Schumacher only got one race as a pay-driver, and was already udner consideration from Benetton before then, so you can't entirely count him.

Deletraz's money never seemed to show up (he had problems of that nature before and after F1 as well), but he has to be the worst who CLAIMED to be pay-drivers. Guys like Diniz and Yoong were nowhere near as bad.

I remember at Spa, 94, he bought Zanardi out of his drive.

A group of fans opposite the pits had a sign saying "we want Zanardi".

The Lotus mechanics apparently quipped "we're going to put a banner up at this side saying 'so do we!'"

Rosset did not bad at Arrows in 96. Finished 9th on his debut. It's just when he signed for Tyrrell in 98 he removed his brain.

Worst - oh god..... Philippe Adams stands out as a nadir in the history of Lotus, doesn't he - except he was more of a non-pay driver wasn't he?
