Don't worry, from my experience the Mallory scrutineer doesn't know the special saloon car regulations. But the one has possibly retired by now.

OK, I can confirm that the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) has announced a revival race for the Modsports and Special Saloons type cars that were such a feature of the UK club racing scene in the 1970 & 80s. The race will take place at Mallory Park on August Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August 2011. The race is open to all Modsports and Saloons, Special & Super Saloons, Thunder Saloons and Donington GT type cars and will be free to acceptable cars that raced in period.

The CSCC can confirm that Joe Ward has entered Baby Bertha, Jon Lee has entered Tony Hazlewood’s Dafnee and Dave Taylor has entered the ex Mick Hill Beetle. Other special cars of the period are planning to join.

The CSCC hopes that there will be sufficient interest generated to run further races later in the year, leading to a regular series for similar modified cars in 2012.

Baby Bertha will be on display on the CSCC’s stand at the Race Retro show in February to publicise the event.

Owners of cars that they feel may be eligible are requested to get in touch with the club.

There are no Tech Regs formed as yet (outside oif what is applicable for the Blue Book, obviously), as this is aimed at existing cars that may have raced in period. If there is sufficient interest then regs for a new series can be considered, with the help of interested participants.

Lets get these fantastic cars back on track!

I think testing at mallory has no noise restrictions, which is one of the reasons Wednesday morning is so popular.

I'm not sure about race meetings.

Looks good, lets hope the cars are still out there to make it a success. Shame I am miles away from getting the Penske IROC ready as that appeared a few times in the period mind you it would hold everyone up the weight of the thing especially with me behind the wheel. I did watch it race once in the original ASCARS at Mallory as it happens and piloted by Brian Rice and it seemed very quick at the time but things move on.

That's uncanny, Gregor; I was about to ask whether you knew about it or were involved (will e-mail a catch up, soon!).

Altered the Thread title to make it a bit bolder. Wish this initiative every success.

Gregor, you are very welcome to get involved.

Sadly, noise limits are an issue & we will have to comply with the normal track noise limits. 105Db? from memory.

You mentioned the ex Mick Hill Beetle, is this the same car raced by Gary Charlwood down at Lydden many years ago. I think this was a single seater based 5 litre car.

Doug Emms from North Yorkshire also ran a Beetle with 5 or 6 litre V8 though the car was not as develped as the Mick Hill car. I think the engine came from a Camaro that Doug raced previously.

The Charlwood car WAS the ex-Mick Hill Beetle. After Mick, it went to Doug Niven, then Jeff Wilson, then Terry King and to Gary C after that.

The Emms car wasn't a Beetle, Peter. I think it was a VW Variant/Fastback thing, a bit like the Hawker DFVW, but Chevy powered. I don't think it raced too often in period, I wonder where it is now?

Hi Dan
Memory is a strange thing but I was fairly certain it was a beetle shape but not as 'developed' as Mick Hill's in shape. I'll get some old race sheets out and see how it's described.

A couple of years back I was at Flamingoland near Pickering with grandkids and passed Doug's old garage. I should have stopped to see if it was still his but was pressed for time and didn't. Next time I'm in the area I will.

I would love to have a race against these great cars at my local circuit in my Sunbeam Lotus Classic Thunder Saloon, but as it was not about in those days I presume it would not be eligible? Saying that I did race in a couple of special saloon races in 1986/87 in my other arched Sunbeam Lotus against the likes of Ginger Marshall, so although not the same car, its a similar one, with the original driver?
