1989 - That was a kind of scary event looking back. I had been the rallycross Chief Startline for a bit by then but nothing prepared me or the team for that event. We let the cars off the Brands grid one at a time (using a flag over the windscreen like a rally stage start) on the radioed instructions of the track controller. Given that the rallycross startline was a tad behind the circuit startline, it was still surprising to note that each car had disappeared in the fog by the time it reached the start light gantry........ Not forgetting also that the only lights on a rallycross car are the rear brake lights........

In similar weather today, and with improvements in health and safety, I do wonder whether the meeting would have gone ahead.

So far I’ve checked for Brands Hatch only. And blimey – you’re right, my documents of the 1996 British ERC round, held on June 30 at Lydden Circuit and won by Kenneth Hansen (Citroën ZX T16 4x4), also show a British Rallycross Grand Prix label. Never really noticed or just simply forgotten? I’m afraid bloody Loisl Alzheimer is on my heels…

Thats correct - the grand prix was run in 96 as part of erc at lydden which hansen won.

However you seem to have forgotten about Croft in 2002 which Haffey won and then Croft in 2004 which Doran won!!

Had a phone call with my British counterpart TW this morning. He reminded me already at the 2002 Croft event with official GP status. According to him a planned 2003 GP at Croft was cancelled in due time and ever since there had been no official British RX GP anymore. At the end of the 1990s I’ve cut my programme by 50+% and follow only ERC rounds ever since. So what kind of event was that 2004 Croft race, did it have MSA permission to be a true British RX GP, or was it just a so-called GP?

The 2004 event was a 'superprix' (as this years event will be), it's not an official MSA RX GP (I believe the amount of £ required to use the title was something ridiculous!)

I think if you check with Pat he wont be too pleased when he has to remind you it was certainly a GP title he won in 2004!

I think it must be one of those rare occasions today then!

Steve Slater (from the MSA) presented Pat with the trophy.

Croft had previously bought the rights for the GP title

Not as rare as I'd like

So if Croft bought the rights to the name was it only for that year or ongoing?

Seems that me ol’ ERC mate TW has problems with Mr Alois Alzheimer too. Story title in his Rallycross World Winter 2004/’05 issue no. 15 reads "Doran takes British GP win". (Croft, November 6 2004)

Apropos: People that are interested in RX statistics should take a look into the new "History" section of Rallycross Online. A similar section for ERC24 is already under construction.
