Which is the greatest car ever to race at Le Mans?
Time for another one of my Le Mans Polls. Which is the greatest car ever to race at Le Mans?
For me it has to be the Porcshe 956/962 |

I agree, but only in terms of success.
For style in my view it would be hard to beat the 917/512's of the early 70's |

All the cars here are good. But despite my love of all the Jags in your list (I presume you mean the XK120C (C-type)) I am going for the 917.

Difficult. I think Nordic is spot on with his choices.
However, you could argue that the Bentleys of 1927-30 are the greatest because they put Le Mans on the map and made it what it is today. |

It has to be the 917. It was voted as the best race car ever by Motor Sport a few months ago.
The Bentley must be a close second as Allon said, it was also almost indestructable bearing in mind the roads at that time were little more than paved dirt roads. SL |

The impossible question, rd!
Three answers from me:- The 956/962 in terms of success, but in terms of style, I also have to go for the 917. To avoid the Porsche route, however, my personal favourite of recent years (as everyone knows by now!) is the Toyota GT One. But the greatest? I've really no idea! |

Well being that the Porsche 956/962 is one of my favourite race cars ever, definitely the best in sportscars, then thats my choice!
917 is a close second though, especially in those Gulf colours! (Although nothing beats a Marukatsu/Fuji Golf 962C!!) |

For me it's the Porsche 917.
That's my all time favourite Sports Car. It's a shame that the John Wyer Gulf Porsche 917 cars never won the Le Mans 24 hours race in 1970 and 1971, but it was a fantastic period in Sportscar racing with there rivals in the Ferrari 512S and 512M. |

rdjones and Friends,
Another mind-bending, heart-blowing, gut-wrenching poll! I have been wondering on which car to vote for HOURS now, and the winner is... ...the Porsche 917. Even today, more than thirty years after its conception, this beast is still out of this world. Muzza |

It has to be the 917, not least because it is still the car that has covered the most miles in a race.
The Alfa 8C also deserves a mention for four consecutive victories in the 30's. |

Any car large or small whose teams had the inclination to make the effort to race at Le Mans are good enough for me.

Hello,
When did a 917 last appear at Le Mans, that depends on whether you count the Kremer Racing 917K/81 from 1981. It wasn't an original 917 but it had an awful lot of 917 bits, does anyone know how much was built from original parts? Otherwise the record was 1969 (2 starters, no finishers), 1970 (7 starters, 2 finishers) and 1971 (7 starters, 2 finishers). That's why the 956 just edges out the 917 for me, better reliability. Good point, but Steve McQueen drove a 917 in the film! Cool car, cool man!
At the end of the day I can't really disagree with any of those. Apart from perhaps the Audi. This is mainly because it's competition wasn't up to much (although that's not it's fault!) and the fact that it's too new. Give it a few years... |

The 917 for me.
I was lucky enough to be there in 70 and 71. The thing that left a lasting impression was the bravery of the drivers - 200 mph plus along the Mulsanne straight (no whoosy chicanes then!) the cars skipping all over the place ( no ground effect!) and nothing to protect them except for a flimsy tube frame and a quarter inch of fibreglass! - and the sound ( shear ecstasy) |

It is just not fair hearing from people who saw these races in person. It's like talking to people who saw Hendrix live. Aargh, I was definitely born 25 years too late! (Banks - you are a very lucky guy, the green-eyed monster has taken control of my senses). |

One lucky man, I reckon Banks. Lots of fantastic memories.
(Actually, what I really intended to say was - "Lucky Git!"). By the way, that '81 bitsa 917, was that the yellow car that Wollek drove? Mention was made of it a coupla months back, if I recall.....). |

(I'm tempted to say that of all the cars that have raced at Le Mans, the Mercedes SLR was certainly the car that made the greatest impact - but I won't... )
I'll go for the Porsche 936. |

If I was serious, I'll say Debora, but this poll is just for fun and I'll go for 917 Porsche...
