Being as every engine is different, and rather complex design, (are we talking the stock block or with all plumbing and accesories added?) about the only way to know (without doing pages of calculations) would be using some pretty advanced software analysis.

Iknow about some 4 cylinder engines .
The weight of a fully dressed K-Series Rover engine is 96.5 kilos wich compares to 158 for the Honda S2000 engine and 137 kgs for the Toyota 1800 ZZE engine ,all komplete with ancilliaries. A fully prepared K-serie Raceengine can be grought down to 78 kilos, wich is a far cry from the s2000 base weight. The Zetec is somewhere in between the Toyo and the rover ,i think. As for the CG height the Honda and Toyo are worse than the rover as they are taller and have quite complicated Headgear.... The very common Lotus elise conversion to the honda Drivetrain suffers massively from the increase in weight and raise of CG ,and the need for very good dampers and a good setup is of paramount importance. In BTCC the WSR run MGs gained massively when the v6 engine was replaced by the 4 cylinder K-series. Powerwise there was said to be no big difference but the 50 kilos they cut at the front high up could be placed as ballast strategically and gave them a huge gain. |

Wat till the wife is out, put the whole thing in the bath, turn the water on until the engine is submerged and all of the bubbles have stopped. Mark the water level, lift it out and let it drain then, using a measured container fill up to the mark. You may do well to buy her some flowers or something in advance...she'll notice the mess!

CG could be found by means of trial and error with suspending the engine in a way so you can turn it on this axis without creating any momentum to find a new equilibrium .

take it to the train station and put it on one of the fat bast*rd scales that are in the toilets. they usually weigh up to about 25 stone which is something like 160 kg (i think)
Might get the odd wierd look as you line up a load of engines at the 20p turnstiles |

the wieght of my 6 cylinder datsun 240z engine is in the region of 350kg to 400kg. This is dry sumped , no alternator, water pump . This was measured by using the corner wieght scales before and after engine instalation. If the engine is too heavy just add more power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is some information about some Jag engines off the top fo my head:
A V12 Jaguar engine is about 300kg! Although it depends on what you consider the engine, which is why ben204z's engine weight is quite high. An Jaguar XK is not much lighter. I have the figures for these somewhere. I've never seen the figures for the later AJ6 6 cylinder engine, but from experience with car weights I'd guess it is approaching being 50kg lighter than the V12 in the same car. |

My all alloy V8 Chevy weighs in at just over 170Kg.
Nice and light. Haven't worked out it's CofG yet. Rob. |

Thinking about it, probably somewhere between the centre line of the crank, and the centre line of the cam.

A ford Kent 116E/701M block weighs 40kg ( thats a precrossflow/twin cam block 198mm deck height,) cos I weighed one last night . . . .as you do!
so a xflow block will be nearer 45 and a 1000cc short stroke probably 35 cranks about 8-10 rod 2kg pistons 2kg cam and followers 2kg head assembly ( pre crossflow) about 10 all Iknow is when its one big lum I can't pick it up very easily and it hurts my back ! |

Nissan V6 3.0 VQ30DE - 140Kg in 'race trim' (only 10Kg heavier than the leaky pile of junk Vauxhall XE it is replacing in my kit car, with 50% more torque and power).
Toyota 1.6 4A-GE - About 85Kg in race trim |
