It would be nice to see this in ALMS once they open up the GTC class.

So this is one of the two new GT3s that Ratel was talking about in an interview recently, wondering what is the other (possibly an Alfa 8C GT3). Not surprised that AMG have done this seeing as though BMW and Audi are already in GT3 though.

What kind of money (if any) is there in GT3 for manufacturers?

They should just make it a GT2 car. Looks WAY too big to be a GT3 machine.

? Too big? Where does it state anything within the GT3 rulebook, that a car has to be below a certain size? For instance,I've also seen a 600hp Mustang GT3 running at the Zolder 24hrs,is that too big too then?

Plus the Gullwing is a supercar, making it a GT3 is just putting it with other, more attainable cars, such as the 911 and as you said, Ford Mustang. If GT1 was still viable, I'd say put it there, cause that's where most of the 'supercars' of the world are. However with that class going under, just stick it in GT2. Plus, all the famous endurance races around the world don't have GT3 classes(bar Sebring), wouldn't you as a manufacture rather beat all the worlds best sports cars (911 RSR, Corvette, F430, Aston, Lamborghini, BMW, Ford GT, Viper, etc), than just Mustangs and 911 GT3's, then be able to brag about it in print? |

Huh, just Porsches and Mustangs in GT3? Right now there are afaik 15 different car models in GT3 including the Ferrari 430, Aston Martin DB9 and Lambo Gallardo.
As I said in the other Mercedes thread: This might very well not be about international races, but about the German market. The ADAC GT-Masters (domestic GT3 series) is almost on par with DTM this year in terms of their TV-deal and the future of DTM looks pretty uncertain right now. So I think this might be a contingency plan for a possible demise of DTM, especially since all of Merc's German rivals are already in GT3. And then there's of course the 24 hours at the 'Ring where they could run their GT3 car - I have no exact data, but if you only count Germany, the Green Hell is probably bigger than Le Mans - at least it gets a good deal more TV time... |

FIA GT3 Interesting that they are unveiling it in one of the few counties that does not race FIA GT3? Could they have ALMS in mind? |

May I repeat it? "keeps the vehicle weight down to 1620 kilograms" My Audi A3 with and "old" steel frame and its "old" 1.8T engine weights 1200Kg. So... 4 more cylinders weight 400Kg more? NaBUru38, its not a supercar to me, either... |

GT2 is more the domain of smaller cars like the AMV8, 911, 430, M3 etc. The Merc is pretty vast, so GT3 is ideal for it. Plus, you never know, they may be testing the water for a possible GT1 variant. |

But Mercedes (at least Norbert Haug) doesn't like racing at the Nordschleife.

Belatti, the SLS AMG is to me a high-performance sports car, just like the 458 Italia, the 911 Turbo and the GT-R R35. A supercar better described as extreme: extremely expensive, extremely performing, extremely rare. Those four cars are quite expensive, very performing, not too rare.

I think the line between sportscar and supercar has been blurred in the past few years for many. I generally consider a supercar of the class of an Enzo, a CGT, a Mc-Merc, etc. I'd say the 458 is a (very) high performance sportscar and that anything above it will be a supercar - I'd be tempted to put the SLS in this same class. Then again, with something like the MP4-12C, it gets more complicated. Is it a supercar? Maybe not if they intend to make a higher performance car as they are rumoured to.

Time for some pigs to grow wings! Mercedes to race the SLS GT3 in the last 3 VLN rounds - most probably as a preparation for an assault on the 24hours in 2011, one would think.
