DVDs and Players

With the advent of HD video camera's and camcorders how long will std DVDs and players still be used for making home made films ? As us that know you can't put HD video onto a std DVD without losing a lot of quality and if you do they are worse than original std digital video.
OK you can do it on blue ray gear but is it worth paying out when you can get as good (or better) quality onto a flash drive or card and simply plug it straight into a modern TV USB socket.
